Hi ppfingsten,

I sincerely regret to hear of the paint concern you are experiencing. If you are in need of an additional layer of assistance while you work with your dealer, we'd be happy to help. Our team is just a PM away.

Mark,
What is Jeep doing to stop the JL hinge brackets from corroding? I’ve seen this in several threads on this forum and on FaceBook. I have a JL on order. Should I be concerned?

When FCA was thinking about going to aluminum here is what they were planning:

At Audi, one plant focuses on steel bodies and another handles aluminum bodies and convertibles. The main issue is contamination. Audi went to NASA to learn how to clean up steel cross-contamination, and built a new line that used HEPA air filtration and a dedicated carbon dioxide gas supply for the MIG and TIG weld guns.
Ford, GM, and Chrysler have all had problems in their plants from cross contamination in the body shops when aluminum hoods and trunks are used on steel bodies due to this atmospheric contamination of ferrous dust in the air settling on the aluminum panels before paint. [Chrysler’s first major use of aluminum body panels was in the 1976 Plymouth Feather Duster.]
Steel dust causes the aluminum to corrode and lift the paint, unless there is meticulous cleaning of the aluminum prior to paint application — in a true clean room attached to the paint shop. Contamination also makes the aluminum welds extremely brittle; and the argon mix shielding gas used in steel assembly causes the misapplication of gas for the aluminum welding processes to “blow holes” in the aluminum weld processes, which in turn trashes the panels and causes a line stop. Aluminum requires pure argon while steel has an argon/carbon-dioxide mix.
Chrysler has acquired land around the current plant. This will presumably be used to build the aluminum bodies, while the paint shop will need to be upgraded for the cleaner conditions required.

So there’s no chance that the 2020 JLUR I have on order won’t deal with corrosion around the hinges?

I don't think most of them will have problems but it is a price we pay as car manufacturers try to make their vehicles lighter for fuel economy. And means less rusting from road salt.

What should the repair shops be doing to ensure it doesn’t come back after it occurs?

Make sure they specialize in painting aluminum vehicles and ask how they eliminate cross contanimation.

Mine are all corroding like the above photos. I have to talk to the dealer and see if they will even do anything. You’d think Jeep would figure this crap out. Absolute BS to have these issues on a $40K vehicle.
i know, I'd expect it on a $39K vehicle but not $40K.

Has anyone ever received any actual help from “JeepCares” on here? When asking a question about what Jeep has done to improve their process regarding this, I was given the, You’ll have a warranty and be able to have your dealer address any concerns” nonsense. Never answering the question!

They aren't all knowing. They are mainly more of a go between for owners and dealer service. Part of FCA social media group as explained in other Jeep forums. And right now, if they did have engineering contacts, most of those contacts may not of been working or just getting back to work and catching up.

Agreed.. Then they should say that instead of not providing a direct answer to a question. “You’re Jeep will have a warranty” is an unacceptable, patronizing answer.

Maybe that person was frustrated with being asked for things they can't do. They have rules set for them by management and have to deal with owners and dealers wanting things they can't do. Let me be a Jeep Cares rep and many definitely wouldn't like my answer a lot of the time.
