Hi

My question will be specific to only one genre of music: Deathcore and Slam; shadow of intent, ring of saturn, peeling flesh, etc... So fast AF bassdrum and downtuned 7 and 8 strings guitar. Ring of saturn actually use 9 strings guitar lol.

I have an audiocontrol lc6i, 5 channel amp with 1000w rms for the sub, 3.5" tweeter, 6.5" in the kickpanel, 6x9" in the soundbar.

I have a 2 doors that I trail/overland with, so space is important. I can't have two 15" sub in the back.

I have made my own tailgate sub box kinda based off the stinger.

1 cubic feet / 28 liters. Only 4.5" of mounting depth, so I'm very limited.

I currently have a old 12" shallow mount Kicker 400w rms that I brought 15years ago. It is missing the hard, punchy kick. I've tried multiple settings but, meh. I'm aware that genre of music will be harder to obtain that.

Looking to change the sub, Looking for something that kicks haaaard. No need for really deep bass like rap music (I do listen rap sometimes).

My shallow mount Kicker is the only sub I've ever had so I'm not really experienced.

With 1 ft3 and 4.5" of backspace what would be the best ?
4x 6.5", 2x 8", or 2x 10" (some will be within the 1 ft3).
Comparing sub, some have less rms watt but higher xmax... What should I be looking for ?

Sorry for the long post.
Thank you!

Ps, my box is really great but I was drunk af when I did the paint job 😅

Honestly, you need more!! More air volume, more power, and a better sub to get what you want. I've had really good results with the TW3 subs from JL. You mentioned nearly everything, except which radio you have. I know you are using a LC6, but you might also benefit with the addition of an Amp Pro.

Yeah, I know. If space wasn't a problem, I'd probably have 2x12". I can't have a bigger box because I need space for trail/camping stuff. I do have 1000watt rms from my amp sub out, I'm pretty sure it is enough. My current sub suck, that's why I want to change it. Just not sure if I should go 1x12, 2x10, 2x8 or 4x6.5. I'm running a lc6i because I still have the factory radio.

I know JL audio is high quality, but 1000$+ for only 400rms ....

Audio in a 2 door isnt easy. I've done the 6x9 upgrade in the sound bar hoping for punchy bass, but you just don't get it. I did buy one of those 10" all in one amp speaker combos and put it in the small storage space in the back. It won't hit super hard...but you could use it to supplement the 12 with punchy bass. You will probably be disappointed though.
If the 12 is putting out bass that is too deep, than just a good 10" sub in its place might be the answer you are looking for. It will be more punchy, but not as deep. I don't know how you would get 2 10s to work with such little airspace. A good dual voice coil 10 might be the way to go. I would check dimensions and buy the speaker so it fits in the box with as deep a magnet as possible.

If you did go with 6"...skar audio makes a pretty good 6" sub. I put one in my computer speaker box and get amazing bass with the right ported enclosure. I wouldnt go with standard 6.5s as they just wont hit hard. You could also check their 8" subs. For the 10" I like kicker.

Look im tired but my first thought was that you had a fan in your tailgate then realized it was a sub then wondered why we aren't putting fans on our tailgates. Cool off while hanging out on a nice hot day on the trail or mall parking lot or whatever.

It's a metal grill to protect the sub lol

mb quart has the rear sound bar with 4 8" subs....An amp on that might be a good way to go too, then keep the 12 for deep bass.

I was looking at maybe putting 2x skar vs10, shallow mount 500rms and recommended volume for a sealed box is 0.5 ft3... So 2x 10" would be my exact volume.

I know 6.5" sub won't hit as hard as a 10", but what if I put 4x 6.5" ? 😂

The JL I mentioned is the 12TW3 sub, not an amp. Which does fit within the air space you have (you'll have to change the cutout diameter). You don't necessarily need the extra power, your type of music demands the headroom. If you are using the LC6, you are getting signal after FCA set up the internal crossover to protect the OEM speaker sizes, and you aren't getting the low frequencies to the sub channel of your amp. Going with the Amp Pro gives you full range signal to the sub.

You didn’t mention a rear seat delete. Maybe build/obtain a custom “rear seat” platform that is itself a subwoofer enclosure? Such an approach is quite common in the crew cab pickup world. If you lose the rear seat entirely, then you have a universe of custom options.

Be leery of some JL underseat options for the front seat. Our (lower production volume) 2-door front seats are different than the more common version due to the 2-door flipper mechanism.
