I have a 2023 Wrangler 392 XR and am having trouble finding a way to mount an antenna to the antenna mount on the tailgate reinforcement. I’m wanting to put a GMRS antenna there and the hole in mount seems too deep for the NMO mount for the antenna. I can’t find ANY solutions here or anywhere. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. I don’t know much about this and my installer (who does a ton of CBs and car audio) is not too familiar with the GMRS stuff either. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for reply. I was hoping there would be a way to use the hole that's already on the tailgate reinforcement. There must not be a way. Mopar made that piece too thick for the NMO to get through. Was hoping someone may have a solution with a different NMO mount. Thanks again. I will definitely order that and use it if no other option.

I wasn’t happy with the hole locations in the XR tailgate reinforcement for a CB antenna. They were either too low or too tall for even a 3 foot antenna to get the Jeep through a 7 foot garage door. I looked at many other options of CB mounts online. I finally decided to design my own. I built many cardboard templates then finally cut some aluminum angle and had it welded together. After mounting it I’m pleased with the final product.

I don't know a lot about Jeeps, but as a 43-year ham operator I have a few insights on antennas, and mounting them. While height is your friend for radio performance, I would strongly recommend going with a hood lip mount instead, and using the stubby "ghost" antenna from Midland. After extensive testing with mine, as well as a 5dB gain whip, the little ghost antenna performs virtually the same, and has the benefit of being nearly immune to trail damage.

Pattern coverage isn't ideal at the front, back or sides (center of the roof is the ideal mounting location for any mobile antenna), but my hood-mounted antenna performs extremely well and there's no issue whatsoever with pattern distortion. The only potential downside is the chance of ignition noise, which isn't as big a deal on FM UHF as it would be on CB or a SSB amateur station.

I did what you’re looking to do on my ’22 392XR. You can get this NMO Mount from Amazon that is designed for a deeper mounting hole. Worked great for me. You just have to add the PL-259 connector to it, which is not difficult. Also got this NMO Cap to cover up the mount when not using the radio/antenna.

Is that for a GMRS radio? You know offhand what antenna that is? That looks great.
Yes for gmrs radio its the midland MXAT03 canyon edge a little pricey but works great. I have it paired to a midland Mxt575 and love it

Mine is a 2meter/70cm antenna for amateur radio but I mounted mine in the front to get it as high as I could. You'll lose a great deal of transmitting capability with the antenna mounted so low on the tailgate. As it is mine is too low for my liking. The coil should be in free space too and not so close to the body but with the amount of plastic on these vehicles the roof option is severely limited.

Tereflex makes one… Not sure if it would work for you, worth a look.

Got my ghost antenna installed on the Mopar reinforced spare tire rack. Thanks for all your replies. Also showing pics of install for microphone plug in mount for Midland GMRS radio. I thought it looks pretty clean.
