I've had a couple of Wranglers now and both of them behaved slightly differently in regards to the ESS, specifically when the AUX battery was low. My previous model a 2021 2.0 Turbo would show the ESS Service Required together with the warning light, my current model, a 2019 Diesel does not, it will simply not engage when there is a low battery situation. It's worth noting that neither of these have the menu option that displays the ESS status, maybe this is a UK thing, who knows.

Now being honest, I always disable it when jumping in, with the odd exception just to make sure it is still working every couple of weeks or so.

TLDR;
However, this afternoon, I forgot to disable and after driving a few years after starting up, I came to a junction and the engine stopped (cant mind seeing the green light) but assumed, "damn, forgot to disable this", however, when I lifted my foot from the brake, the engine didnt restart and the cluster displayed "Auto Start/Stop Required", no warning lights, nothing but the thing wouldn't start. I got myself in a bit of a fluster as someone was waving me out and I cant recall my exact actions to get the Jeep to start, but I do recall sitting there in Neutral (the N was flashing on the cluster together with the "Auto Start/Stop Required"). Thinking back, I may have attempted to go into Reverse to allow the car in front of me to turn in, but regardless the Jeep seemed stuck with no engine running and displaying the "Auto Start/Stop Required". I also attempted to start using the button with this didnt work, maybe I was in N at that point, honestly cant remember and I'm also not exactly sure what I dont to get it to start, more likely put it into Park and used the button.

After this, I immediately disabled by using the button and headed home, however on the way home, I enabled again and it went through its stop/start cycle as it normally would leaving me puzzled. I have replaced both batteries as recently as 12 months ago and on normal driving the voltage shows either 13.9 or 14.1, which has always been normal for this one.

Thinking out loud, if there were battery issues, the ESS would not have engaged, but what scenarios would prevent it from restarting the engine?

Any thoughts?
