Android Auto- Apps that work and those that don't?

Just upgraded my radio to the 7", seems some functions didn't work at first but they are appearing almost daily.
I have attempted to use some of the apps that the Play Store says will work with Android Auto only to find out they either crash when opened or when I attempt to use, two apps I would like to find a way to make work are Waze and VLC for Android. Any tips on what I may be doing wrong?
Pixel 2 XL updated and virtually error free, except for Android Auto apps.

I've got Waze to work when phone is hooked up through USB but not wirelessly.

Waze loses some functionality like route steps, don't know if they added it now, found AA to be buggy and also freeze at times, last thing I want is to be lost somewhere on a highway in the dark with a failed GPS and having to fiddle with my phone. I uninstalled it after a few weeks of use, also my phone is 5.4 screen so it's not a tiny screen, I also don't play music from my phone, I use a 32GB flash drive loaded with mp3

A great app that works with AA is Scanner Radio. You can listen to police, fire, aviation, railroad, nautical, and other scanners all over the world. I use it during severe weather to listen to Skywarn network, which identifies funnel clouds, tornadoes, fallen trees, and other hazards we'll before the media reports them.

After downloading it to your phone, just hit the headphone icon twice and you'll see it.

Also, Cookie Monster's voice is available for Waze right now. My kids love it!
