So I'm looking to add a self powered sub to the back of my jlu sport s. I'm having trouble finding a spot where it will be out of the way and some what hidden. We have two young kids so we seem to take a lot of cargo with us when we go anywhere. I don't have a lot of experience with audio components. My thought was to mount the 8" sub/amp combo in the storage area under the back cover. The dimensions are almost perfect but I don't know if it closes too tight and will effect the subs performance. Maybe not enough air flow for the amp. Any input would be great, thanks.

I'm in the same boat and just bought the 8" jl audio sub. I'm planning on having it mounted to the tailgate, but am very concerned about it getting stolen

Do you think the storage area under the trunk would be too restrictive?

I mounted a 8 inch JL audio box to the tailgate utilizing the trail rail mounts under the tailgate trim. I used z channel aluminum strips mounted to a plate attached to the tailgate. This way I can slip it off if needed and is somewhat theft resistant as the tailgate has to be open to remove it.

What about buying the factory side plastic housing piece that the Alpine option comes with and mounting it in there? Not sure if they sell that part without the sub but would assume so. Then it is out of the way and looks factory.

Had mine installed with a bit of extra wire so I can move it around as I need to, or pop it out if need be. I didn't want it "hard mounted" where I was forced to live with it stuck in the same spot.

Extreme Innovations in Webster. So far they have done 6 JL's in our group and no one has had a complaint. If you talk to them let them know Chris with South Coast sent you. I don't have the receipt with me, but they did a lot of work at the same time. Not real sure on the price for just the sub and install.

Both. You could have found it had I given you the correct name.... Ultimate Innovations.....Sorry about that LOL.
Shouldn't be too bad a ride down, unless you try to cross town at 5PM. It's what, 45 minutes?

I have 3 kids and just wrestled with the same thoughts mounting a 8" jl audio self powered sub($400 new) and I ended up making a mounting board using a 2x6 and side mounting by the rear tire well this weekend instead of opting for the installer doing a custom tailgate mount. It was $250 for sub + bass knob hookup with 8 gauge wire kit. If I would've opted for the tailgate mount, the installer was going to charge an additional $250 for soldering extra wire needed to reach the tailgate + custom mounting work. They didnt like having the wiring in a door hinge area frequently bending every time the tailgate moved. They also didnt recommend a 20+ lb sub box with 1/2" MDF board hanging on a door that could be slammed shut.

By the way, I drove a Alpine upgraded JL for 2 days and my current system(8" jl audio powered sub + replaced the (4) 2.5" teeeters with 3.5" plug and play Kickers with dynamat added up front) sounds just as good if you're playing high quality music. The jl audio sub sounds better than the factory alpine sub IMHO...it's awesome. Here's the mounted sub:

Do you have a link for the plug and play kickers?
