Before I invest in fancy plastic aux fuel storage bolted to the sides of my hard top, I want to understand if there is an elegant solution to adding extra fuel storage. Ideally this would be chassis level to keep the center of gravity low as possible.

Thoughts?

If you're talking aux fuel tank that feeds into your main there's a company called long ranger based in Australia that makes a solid product. Here's the link: Long Ranger. I contacted them a while back in regards to whether or not the 2 door v6 tank would fit on the 2 door 4cyl and they weren't sure as they haven't had a vehicle to test it on. I'm fairly certain someone in the forum has installed this on their rig.

Replacing the muffler opens up a ton of space. Maybe there
Yes, I would think that would be a good idea to maximize tank space if that is the location.

Any chance that would turn the Jeep into a 1973 Ford Pinto? :)

That 10 gallon LongRanger tank looks nice, but I'm wondering if it would still fit with the 48V eTorque battery or whichever auto-4WD component interferes with certain exhaust systems (Borla Climber with mini muffler near cat).

The 25 gallon GenRight muffler delete tank is a smart idea, but is only for the 4-door, though I'm still not 100% sure why it wouldn't work for the 2-door. I'm guessing maybe something to do with needing to remove the plastic rear tool storage tub?

That was my very first car, so I ain't scared! Though I'm now starting to wonder why my parents were okay with it ? At least nobody ever tailgated me back then!

I have a tank on order from Long Ranger. The only dealer in North America is out of Vancouver Canada. The tank will not fit with the eTorque system. They do not stock 2-door tanks, custom order, they do try to keep 4-door tanks in stock. Just don't confuse Long Range (North America dealer is Long Range America) with Long Ranger, two different companies. Only Long Ranger makes a tank for a 2-door.

There is that!
So here is what I did on my TJ which IIRC measures the content of the gas tank in quarts, rather than gallons.

I moved the gas tank to where the rear bumper was. This required cutting out the frame brace. IIRC I moved the gas tank back 4 or more inches. Then I braced the back of the frame with 1 / 4 inch steel channel. Then my bumper was made from 4 inch Schedule 40 Steel pipe. The intent was to replace the tank with a larger one. Somehow after all that work, Fabing and welding I never got around to install my bigger tank. WHY? I ended up stretching my wheelbase 3 in.

I googled it and found a company or 2 that made gas tanks. Give them the dimensions and where you want the spout and if they did not have one that fit they build one. Turns out they had one that would have fit perfect.

That said, I would chase down good welder and fab man. I would start with removing the muffler setup and run dual out the back. That would open up the space and take a look at what needs to be fabbed and braced.

Doesn't AEV make a tire carrier with an extra fuel tank? That could be another option.

West Coast Off-Roaders in Vancouver is your only option for an aux tank for a two door. Takes a long time to arrive.
