My 2020 Rubicon loses power, including the power steering, after driving about twenty miles, and the instrument panel lights up. When I turn off the jeep and restart it, it won’t shift out of park while the engine is running. I took it to the dealership in June 2024, and they diagnosed the issue as a faulty ABS module. However, the part is on backorder, and my jeep has been in the service department for nine months. I was assigned a case manager who expedited the process, but I'm still waiting. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Hey there, I'm actually knowledgeable about this and have dealt with it personally

Something happened with the ABS module supplier. It took them over half a year to find a new supplier to get new modules produced. However the new modules refuse to program. The programming issue has been known and a bulletin has been available on this since SEPTEMBER. They stopped all production again once the issue became known. Zero resolutions available, you're shit out of luck. If you are within a lemon law period I'd strongly suggest contacting an attorney and going down that route. I think the engineers are just ignoring the issue.

I've got a JL at my shop that's been here since April because of this. Still no updates. I posted a picture of the bulletin below. Ignore the January 2025, its been around for over half a year at this point. Even if you managed to source a module you wouldn't be able to actually program it.

I noticed this became a problem immediately after Kia and Hyundai recalled 3 million vehicles with no resolution due to a fire risk from brake fluid leaking into abs pump motors. Did stellantis use the same supplier and sneak away from a wide sweeping recall?

I doubt it. I think this is more of Traveres' nonsense price war he waged on Suppliers. The original stopped working for us and they had to scramble for a replacement, except the replacement is defective.

They're only able to be programmed once I believe. You can try installing one and running the ABS initialization routine and seeing what happens
That's crazy. VW has some quirks with their pumps, but I've never heard of one time use. A used one should already be programmed, I think @mg2020rubicon should buy one off eBay and roll the dice.
Edit - there is a company that rebuilds these modules, I will see if I can find it.

On the older models it just stores a vin mismatch code and leaves the light on but everything else works. In the JL it’s a critical module so it may or may not work at all. I’d like to know the answer as well.

Hi 2020Rubicon,
I have a similar problem with my 2019 Sahara. It’s started ESG light, then codes that it’s loosing communication with the TCM. The vehicles would say to place it in park and then drive. It would drive a while and Then the ESG would happen again. Occasionally the powersteering would go out. Bought it used at 24k miles. When this happened, it took straight to dealer service and they said it had a clean service record. (Sept 2024) by Jan 2025 it got worse with a car wash. ESG and the TCM codes, unable to talk to transmission. After a wait (sometimes 2 hours) it would only remote start. Dealer service could not diagnose. I was out 220$ diagnosing and 150$ for rivets to check transmission control into. And $250 for a rental car. They declared it undiagnosable. I picked it up. It drove fine until March. ESG, power steering and transmission codes again. Different dealer service replaced the c-bus. Then on the test drive it broke down with a ABS module error. No eta for the part. It’s been 6 weeks. No vehicle. Warranty can’t pay for a part that’s not available. Can’t find a secondary place to buy it.

any ideas? I’m 23rd in the queue nationwide. NO ETA! how can there be no options for potentially millions of vehicles?

Does anyone know what is causing the ABS module to fail? Is there internal corrosion from water intrusion? Corrosion of electrical contacts? Would a routine brake fluid replacement prevent these failures?

The vehicle had 23k miles when I bought it and had 3 episodes of ESC and no communication w TCM and then ABS. I’m not sure how often you suggest I change the brake fluid but 23k miles sounds pretty quick. As for water intrusion, the ESC and TCM did happen after an autobell car wash, but other times it was clear blue skies. 8 weeks without a vehicle. Part is backordered nationally. No ETA for a part. Jeep HQ sucks. Unresponsive. They put “next update on <date+7 days>” on emails they send. My Jeep case manager never picks up the phone. Each time, I get handed to someone else.

This sounds fun aa a new owner :(

Is this a nationwide thing? Desert, North, South any coincidences at all with them? literally millions on the road.

Can a JY one be used? I saw mention of yes and no searching around

Nationwide backorder is what jeep service at local dealer and national Jeep customer care. I’m in S.Carolina at the moment.
Side note: Interestingly they said if they locate the part at another dealership, that dealership isn’t required to sell them the part. 🤨
