My 18 JL Jeeps radio keeps shorting/resetting when I use my Media USB port. If I buy a second hand OEM replacement do I need an ID code from that replacement radio or is it a simple plug in play?

You need the code, I did when I swapped my 5" for a 5" with satellite. Be aware that there have been firmware updates, my replacement was not current.

It depends on where you get the replacement radio from. Places like infotainment.com or nismopar.com will program the radio with your VIN, so no code is needed. If you source your radio from other places, you will need the security code.

The security code is the number with in the owners manual? Or can I call a dealer to unlock with the numbers on the back of the replacement unit?

It is unique to each radio.

Some dealers will provide the code, some won't. You will need the VIN of the vehicle the replacement radio came out of. They require this to prove the radio was not stolen. You will then need to provide your vehicle info.
