So I have an intermittent issue with my '21 4xe that I can't seem to find anyone else having the same issue on here. Figured I would share and see what knowledge is out there.

3 separate times now while still having charge and cruising 50-70mph the engine surges on and off coming and out of EV mode. Sets a check engine light every time. Some time shortly after (usually ignition cycle) a red power cord light comes on and "service charging system" message. If this happens and you will not be able to start the Jeep at all yland you are stranded.

However, if you have a tazer or ELM reader and clear DTCs is starts and functions as if nothing ever happened.

Has anyone had an similar experience and discovered the cause or a solution? Regardless it sounds like a dealership visit.

Yeah highly possible. I have suggested this as well as other fixes to the service department based on things I have read and personal automotive knowledge. They claim it's the battery control module and want to replace the HV battery under warranty. Of course I will let them replace the HV battery under warranty, but they have to confirm the issue with Star report engineer for some reason that has now taken over 3 weeks. And now the dealership won't return my calls for days.

@JeepCares still hanging around to help us with difficult dealerships?

I knew I couldn't be the only person with this issue. Now I've finally found someone else going through with this... Welcome to the club? :crying:

FYI. My dealer also initally thought a batterly replacement was needed but need to run some additional tests with Star. Star nixed that idea and currently on day 77 them working with Jeep on trying to find a fix...

There's a BPCM flash for this DTC. TSB 08-054-22 REV. B. Have your dealer do it, it's covered under the extended hybrid warranty.

Thanks for sharing the information, I just had the same thing happen to my 2021 4xe...Thought I would have to tow but clear DTCs is starts and it is back to normal. Still waiting for my replacement stabilizer bar so have to drive slow anyway.

I have a 2021 Rubicon 4xe with 37000 miles on it exact same problem I've had it towed to the delarship 3 times now most recently yesterday the first 2 time they plugged it into their computer and it was fixed they didn't explain anything to me aside saying it constantly needs updating but the whole not starting and 12 volt battery same song and dance I'm ready to call the bank and the repo man I'm tired of a unreliable boat anchor afraid to drive it anywhere and it leaves me stranded.

I have always been a Jeep fan, and I understand there are challenges with implementing a PHEV, but if the battery system throws an error like this one, couldn't you just allow the car to drive anyway? If check engine comes on, need to be sure you have a reader or drive to dealer, because once off, no starting. Seems like a lot of towing by people when you can drive it fine after clearing the DTC. I had no problems for the first 20K, but since; I've had my hybrid connector/transmission replaced (1 month in the shop), my differential had to be serviced due to groaning (something about incorrect/not enough fluid when built - 2 weeks in the shop), and I'm waiting on a stabilizer bar for the infamous wheel wobble. FORM was fixed with an update and gas cap replaced due to DTC. Still waiting for the battery recall fix....For a car with 27K, it has been a hassle. But when it is running correctly, it is a blast to drive.

Glad to hear I'm not alone. After a few months of the dealership doing nothing but telling me they were ( another story) my wife had enough. I managed to get the GM to take it on trade for full amount and assume the responsibility to fix it and bought a Grand Cherokee. It was a terrific Jeep for 40k, the hit a brick wall with this issue sadly.

keeping a 4XE long term is a gamble. since everything is priority to Jeep, you’re stuck at the dealer. Parts backorder. Is there game. When technology changes and they start discontinuing parts for the old model many will be in for a reality check.

I’m having this exact same issue. Dealer is saying it’s due to aftermarket items being connected to the battery. These aftermarket items have been connected to the battery for over 2 years with no issue. Has anyone found a root cause for this ?
