Jeep Wrangler JL 4 hour trip, cargo net question 20221204_144048

So I leave in the morning and I didn't have time to get decent straps to load my luggage, but the rack came with a cargo net.

Which kind of brings me to this post, I'm wondering how safe and secure a net is on the free way I typically push my jeep to 80 however I never drove with a roof rack before so I may end up going 70 or 75, either way how does a roof rack and how does a net perform on highways?

Any advice about roof racks or nets and securing luggage is appreciated.

I’d strap anything down secure on the roof. Those bungee nets won’t hold up to much on the wind blast with a heavy load. You definitely don’t want to be the guy with the flying luggage off your roof into traffic….just my two cents.

It's iffy. Depends on the cargo and the quality of the cargo net (and most cargo nets are cheap crap). As a general rule of thumb, if the cargo can be strapped down then strap it down. It's too easy to be that guy with just a cargo net.

I would avoid the roof rack at all costs unless the interior of your Jeep is full. Aside from the risk of losing cargo or wet cargo should you encounter weather, the already marginal fuel economy will be worse.

And don’t use the cargo net to secure cargo. Get some good ratchet straps.

Nets are more of a secondary containment for small, lightweight stuff that may work loose.

No personal experience with it, but traveling 80mph with a 20 to 40mph headwind might be a bit much for a net.
