get a "cheap" roof rack. Look into exposed racks, or dezee. you can fit all the bulky light stuff on it. That's what we do. btw, I have a 2 door jeep. lol. I did order a trailer though.

The JLU has a massive trunk. We camp super comfy, I bring a lot of shit. I find it difficult to believe that a small roof rack + the trunk wont be enough.

Before having a baby wife and I would take the rear bench out of the jeep and that's all we needed, we had a little extra space left.

You could also buy a hitch basket and strap totes to it. They are cheap at Harbor Freight.

Setting up for a fam of four or more is tight when boondocking. After years of experience less is more is the best way to look at it. Also look into size of everything. Camp chairs are normally huge and take up space. CLIQ chairs are the size of a water bottle is one example. I have the AAL setup and have been out for weekends at a time. Its doable but I need a roof rack or tire carrier shelf for more. The boys are still young enough where they need alot. lol

I vote for roof rack's and a ski cargo box. You can fit a ton of camping gear in them(ask me hoe I know) and they serve just as well on family ski trips. Or just get a teardrop.
