So I don't own a jeep, but is a fully loaded 4 bike bike rack too heavy with the leverage because of how the wranglers need a hitch extension? I'm going to assume that ebikes are out of the question because they're even heavier. I have the 1up super duty which is about 95lbs and put in 4 adult bikes. That will be maybe another 120-150lbs at the back.

I want to get a wrangler, but this might be a concern If I cant carry 4 bikes safely.

Can't help you with bikes hanging off the rear, but here's a Super Jet and carrier hanging off a 2 door JK. Weight is about 425 + 30. I use the same setup on my JL. I typically only go from my house to the ramp at the end of my street.

I have the Quadratec 4 bike rack. I used it on my 2 door JL with zero issues. Haven't tried it on the new 4 door JL, but should have zero issues. This one did not require an extension and I had 34's..305x70x17......And it had the Smittybilt tire relocator which pushed it out and up just a bit. The only time I needed the hitch extender is when I used a folding carrier rack....and that was because I wanted to fold it up, especially when parking.

no problem with the weight.

if you've got bikes that you're in to, and depending on the bikes, you might consider a Draftmaster rack. not inexpensive, but if you have standard Quick Release front wheels on the bikes, this gets them up and out of the way and makes it possible to still get into the rear of the vehicle while the bikes are loaded up.
if you're talking junker bikes, this rack may cost more than the bikes combined, but if you're into upper-end bikes, it costs less than a fresh set of wheels.

You could also split them up if you are worried about too much overhang / weight on the back. Two on a hitch rack, two on a roof rack.

Good afternoon!

You're absolutely right to be cautious about the weight and leverage, especially when it comes to carrying multiple bikes on a Jeep Wrangler. It’s crucial to properly distribute additional weight on your Jeep for maintaining vehicle stability, ensuring safe handling, and preventing damage to the suspension and other components.

In your case, I’d say go ahead and pull the trigger on that Jeep! With all the unique accessories available for Jeeps, they are definitely capable of carrying heavy loads—just as long as they are within the vehicle’s safety limits!

If you place the heavy-duty bike and one adult bike on a roof rack, and then put the remaining three adult bikes on a hitch rack, you’re effectively distributing the weight between both the front (roof) and the rear (hitch) of the Jeep. Here's how this setup would work out:

Weight Breakdown:

-Heavy-duty bike: 95 lbs
-1 adult bike: ~30-40 lbs
-3 adult bikes: ~110-120 lbs total

Total weight: 235-245 lbs combined

Load Distribution:

Roof Rack (150-200 lbs capacity): Here are some examples from our site of two different roof rack options!

-You can place the heavy-duty bike (95 lbs) and one adult bike (~30-40 lbs) on the roof rack.
Total weight on the roof: 125-135 lbs.

This keeps you within the capacity of the roof rack (150-200 lbs) and helps distribute the load toward the front of the vehicle. It also keeps the center of gravity lower than if all the bikes were on the roof.

Hitch-Mounted Rack (up to 140 lbs capacity): Here is a example of a 4-Bike Hitch Rack!

-The 4-bike hitch rack can carry a combined weight of up to 140 lbs. You can place the remaining 3 adult bikes (~110-120 lbs total) on the hitch rack.
-Total weight on the hitch rack: 110-120 lbs, which is well within the 140 lbs capacity of the rack.

Would also like to include that, we do offer a discount to Forum members! Just reach out to us via Private message, send your Quadratec account information, and we can get that discount added for you!

Hope this helps address some of those concerns you were having about the safety and handling of your bikes on a Jeep Wrangler!

Have a great rest of your week!
Ice :)
