All gas caps are required to seal the tank, all modern vehicles have emission sensors that monitor this, the 2023 is no different. They are just exempting themselves from a return incase yours leaks, since it becomes keyed to your key.
this is the one I was looking at

From the hood latches to the soft top, half doors or no top. Jeeps have always been vulnerable to theft or vandalism.
I still remember my YJ days in the late 80s early 90s, where the top and doors would stay off for days and weeks. Biggest worries were cats sleeping in it or thunderstorms. Theft was literally non-existent.

Ok so I'm thinking that while the cap is about 75, Jeep quoted me 130.- if they had to install it probably.
Another question to you, why did you get a locking cap if tanks are basically anti-syphoning and drillers could get to your tank? thx!
I'd guess the $55 markup ($130 - $75) is the dealer's labor fee to key, or assemble, the Mopar locking cap to match the key on your fob. That job isn't worth $55, IMO, but the dealer is free to price things as they see fit. It'd be one less key to carry, as compared to the $24 cap + keys sold by Extreme Terrain, but that's up to you to decide. :)

Yes, gas tanks can be drilled, but that requires a tool to do so, a container to catch the spilled fuel, and cover of darkness (or some other type of privacy) to get away with the crime. The value of a locking fuel cap is in its ability to dissuade the casual thief, and/or the person who wants to vandalize the vehicle by pouring sugar down the fill neck. That sort of thing.

Assembling the Mopar lock isn't hard. It's trial and error. The video link in the earlier post accurately reflects what is involved with the process.

Man y’all live in some hardcore neighborhoods.
shoot they do it in nice neighborhoods out here. they specially target hybrids for the cats.

the wranglers have a skid plate under the fuel tank. just more to drill through. have there been any actual reports of this happening to a JL? get a nice aftermarket steel skid plate and the thieves will just pass on your jeep and go for an easier target, unless youre out in the middle of nowhere. and we dont have large tanks either so not too much fuel to be gained from it.

also our cats are way tucked up high. i looked at this when i first got my jeep to see if it was a concern. it seems like too much effort to get our cats compared to the next vehicle. full size trucks are a prime target: easy access to the cats/fuel tank, some times multiple cats, big fuel tanks.

Don’t give anybody any ideas there!?

Generally they show up in a group of 4 unmarked vans and pull right into your driveway. The first van has a long drill attached to the front and drills all the way from the back of the Jeep right into the tank - the "drill man" is usually the leader
After he does that a group of 6 hoodlums jump out of the second van with buckets to collect the gas. A seventh hoodlum uses a mop and wringer to get any that spilled on your driveway as not to waste or cause an environmental hazard
After the gas is empty the seven hoodlums lifts up one side of the Jeep while an eighth hoodlum shows up out of the third van with a sawz-all and cuts off your catalytic converter
After this is all done and the gas and converter are safely stored in the 4th van they all drive off for pizza to celebrate another height well done
.....
Just get whatever locking gas cap you want and quit farting around asking about it ?

Yes, that makes sense. Just curious as to your thought process.

Did you do this before you went to prison or after you got out?
