After spending $85 to fill up my new Willys and I parking on the street I feel vulnerable and was thinking of getting a locking gas cap and they’re like about $25 online but when I call the dealer they said I’d have to get one that would be calibrated with my key which is $130. Does anybody know if I can still get the mechanical one cheaply even though Jeep parts said it wouldn’t fit the neck of tank. I can’t believe they would modify such a standard part. Thx!

Based on your thread title, in sure by 2922 you won't need a gas cap, but in the mean time there are many many options.... ;)

Yeah that’s the link that I have as well but the parts person said that it’s not going fit on a 2023 and this link only goes up to 2022 so he could be right. Well, at least this could slow somebody down hopefully. Yeah, I feel like with those hood latches, like it’s almost like a free-for-all for somebody. Thank you.

From the hood latches to the soft top, half doors or no top. Jeeps have always been vulnerable to theft or vandalism.

Theres literally zero reason a gas cap that fits a 2022 model wont fit a 2023 model. Your parts person wants you to buy from HIM.

Jeep News Flash...
Jeep has announced the only changes between the 2022 and 2023 jeep wranglers
Introducing the new improved gas cap, same size, same shape, same color, only not compatible with each other.... ;)

Oh haha I didn’t see that it was a nine instead of zero( 2023!!) i’ll be dead by then, so it won’t matter ? in the meantime, I just talked to Extreme Terrain and they said that they think that the $23 Mopar mechanical locking gas cap should fit so I’m going to order it and I’ll keep everybody posted

The lock cylinder in the Mopar fuel cap must be assembled to match your factory key. Here's a video that describes the process. Although it looks it a bit complicated, it's a reasonably straightforward task. I actually enjoyed the work.

I will take a look. The only thing is that the cap is about 130.-. Extreme Terrain said that if it seats properly and the warning light doesn't come on, the mechanical one should work and if not it can be returned. Wondering if 2023 has a new sensor and the expensive one is the only solution...you wouldn't know for sure, would you? thanks!

All gas caps are required to seal the tank, all modern vehicles have emission sensors that monitor this, the 2023 is no different. They are just exempting themselves from a return incase yours leaks, since it becomes keyed to your key.

Not sure what you're asking, Micki. The link to the Mopar fuel cap illustrates a price of $75.34. It was a confirmed fit on my 2021 Wrangler, and should be the same on your 2023 Jeep.

Possibly Extreme Terrain is attempting to disclaim any return privilege if the non-OEM cap they're tying to sell doesn't fit.
sorry I answered you before

I'm sorry I hadn't yet clicked the link before I answered you because I got distracting reading that it's hard to syphon off gas nowadays, and ppl are drilling out tanks instead, leaves me wondering why then get something that locks anyway? (I was quoted 130.- from my local parts house, I haven't yet learned how to shop for auto parts as I've never needed anything before). No, Extreme Terrain said I could return it. Thanks.

the cap I was looking at had it's own set of key, everything mechanical:

Ok so I'm thinking that while the cap is about 75, Jeep quoted me 130.- if they had to install it probably. I don't think I can handle this myself, as I'm not good with this sort of thing,.
Another question to you, why did you get a locking cap if tanks are basically anti-syphoning and drillers could get to your tank? thx!
