So…the new winch option for 2024 is an 8k winch not 10k, it seems 10k & 12k winches are the most popular on this forum. Is 8k enough? I imagine it’s lighter although I couldn’t find the weight spec, certainly cheaper almost $200 difference in Canada. I buy the best I can with my mods but I’m not a bottomless pit of money & the difference pays for the winch plate. I would think the Jeep engineers did the math. I am in Ontario Canada & ride mostly overland trails & have never needed a winch (chainsaw yes) but more self reliance is a good thing. Opinions?

Most people go larger because they want to pull their buddies F350 out of the sand/mud.

Jeep engineers have stayed at the 8k range for years and years due to the fact it’s all you will ever need for self recovery which is what a winch is meant for. There is zero need to go over it.

For liability reasons I am very surprised that they are making a winch a factory option. There are so many things that can go wrong if a person uses a winch the wrong way. To CYA I am sure there is a lot of legal verbiage somewhere that defines what they classify as 8K winch use.

I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I like to have double the winch capacity of the vehicle, so that's over 8K so I like having the 10K on mine. But I'm sure they did their research and found that an 8K is fine for the JL.

Max line rated @ 8K........Keep your vehicle equal or less than 5.3K pounds.

Max pull is usually rated with min rope/cable on drum.

Note: Most winch manufactures demand the operator leave at least 5 complete wraps of rope/cable on drum for safety.

Not enough for my rig..........

The purpose of a factory winch is probably like the Jeep in Jurassic Park -- when you get stuck offroad, you can self-recover off a tree and pull yourself back on track. (Unless the dinosaur kills you first). If you are recovering heavier vehicles or from mud, you really have a more specialized use and might want a bigger winch.

So I'm not disputing your numbers, just trying to educate myself. I have pretty much decided on the 10K...I would hate to be left stuck or unable to help over a few hundred dollars. I am interested where the 5.3K vehicle weight comes from.

Most manufacturers including Warn recommends 1.5 X GVWR to determine winch pull

If you use a snatch and hook the winch back to the vehicle you are looking at double. So 16,000 pounds of pull. If I'm not mistaken, the 8k,10k, and 12k is a specified number with barely any rope out. The max pull changes at you have more line out. I might be wrong on that, but I swear I read that somewhere. So, a 10k was what I felt to be the best choice. I'm guess Jeep does the 8k for room. The 10 and 12 barely fit, and if not put perfect will rub in a few places. The 8k has wiggle room.

8k is a good size for a Wrangler. Some people here would put a 20k winch on if they could. And I've seen more than a few people with 2k and 3500k winches on the front of their Jeep too.

Jeep - "nuff said
For what it's worth (about 2 cents or so), I specifically went with the 12k Zeon over the 10k for the added abilities. For the extra $100 up front, there is no weight or dimension difference. The 12k is a tad slower but draws less amps at similar pull weights and has the ability to go big if needed.
Since I generally run solo, the extra strength is comforting insurance be it for mud, rock, or hill.

The 8k winch is lighter, smaller, and faster - but I'm in no rush and like to carry the "big stick" 12k.
The 8k from the factory will address 99% of Jeep owner's needs. It'll also make the installation (upgrade) to a larger winch easier for those that chose to do so.

The greatest pulling force is achieved with a single wrap on the drum.
Each additional wrap results in less pulling force.

I had a 10k on my grand Cherokee, and the problem was when I was winching only 50' or less, the winch had so many turns wrapped on it already that it only really had maybe 6k of pulling power. It got the job done but really felt like it was struggling sometimes.

I've got a 12k Warn on my wrangler because I like knowing it's always going to get the job done, even in a worst case scenario.

I would personally not consider using an 8k on a Jeep. Sure it'll work in most instances, which is why Jeep decided it's fine to use it on new Jeeps, but it's really just the bare minimum and will struggle to get you (or someone else) out of a really tough situation.

And look what they did to the bumper when you get that piddly 8K winch... what a farce
