Hello all, I have a 2024 Rubicon X MT 2 door on order. I plan on upgrading to 35" tires but will never go any bigger. Very limited off road use. Should I stay with the 4:10 gears or change to 4:88 ?

Thanks

I'd rather just do 4.56. Get it as close to stock for mapping as possible. Especially if you never plan on 37s. Of course, others may like the slight higher ratio.

I'd personally go with 4.88s and 35s.

4.56 would be adequate. 4.10 would be liveable for low altitude, no big hills, and little off road.

4.88s.

Those calculators and charts don't factor the added weight and rolling resistance of larger tires. I've regeared and re-regeared (not fun or cheap) and its always better to a notch lower (bigger number) than be too high.

I plan on going for 4.88 when I re-gear the sport. 3.45s on 33s is a struggle in CO, but still a great road trip Jeep. Would probably stay at 35's but will re-gear before that.

I didn't elaborate, but maybe I should. I've owned both a JLR with 4.10 and 4.88 factory gearing. The 4.88 is by far a better choice.

2021 with 4.10 was fine, but 5th and 6th gear are so close in ratio that it makes them redundant. Basically, 6th is nothing but a flat terrain cruising gear, no passing power. It doesn't really make a difference over 5th for mileage either since they are so close.

2022 with 4.88 is much better at freeway speeds; although 5th and 6th are obviously still close together, they are both put your power curve/rpm curve in a more useful place. 5th gear has a little more passing power, meaning, you can drop a gear and feel like it's useful for passing. With the higher gearing that wasn't a thing, which meant you'd have to drop to 4th. That wasn't practical at freeway speeds.

With either gearing, I find myself often going from 4th to 6th, but with 4.88 gearing I use 5th more often than I did with 4.10 gearing.

4.88 is the only way to go.

Another vote for 4.88's My LJ runs 35's with 4.56's, but that engine has massive torque at idle, and our 3.6's don't have that type of curve. Even if I lived at sea level, I'd go 4.88's in a JL.

The 4.0 and 3.6 aren't much different in power (hp/tq) at low RPM, not that it matters.

Full Disclosure - the 4.0 in my '06 LJ is no longer that, it's a 4.6 Stroker. That said, even stock the driving characteristics of the inline 6 are way different than the characteristics of the V6. Maybe on paper the two engines are similar, but the *feel* of the JL at low RPM (in high range) is lackluster, and needs lower gears to compensate. Or maybe it's me?

Not for sure what a X MT is, I have a 24 JLR-X (2 door)

I ordered mine with the 4:88s and I not only have NO regrets but LOVE IT with 35 tires, it really wakes up your Jeep and turns it into a Red Light Bandit to boot.

I get day in day out on Interstate 15.9 +/- a few tenths mpg

It's not you. My 4.0 in my WJ pulled at idle in a way that my 3.6L never does. In stop and go traffic the WJ would accelerate at idle in second gear, even. Offroad I could feel it too.

You can show all the charts you like, but in terms of feel, the 4.0 had way more torque at low RPMs.

My 2D X has the 4:10 on 33", and I am planning the next set of tires to be 35", so it looks like I'll also want the 4:88 gears.
Is there a consensus on which manufacturer makes the best set? Will changing the gearing have any effect on the warranty? I would think that if it was made by MOPAR it should be good to go.
