It has been almost 10 years since I bought a Jeep, having purchased an absolute base model back in 2013. I went into the dealership and had to sit through the 3hr. game they play - you know, where they show you a bunch of line items that materialized out of nowhere - and the guy has to go "talk to his manager" like a dozen times.

One line item was for "etching" ($400). I guess they etch the glass with the VIN numbers to prevent theft? I told them I didn't want it and the salesman said "Well, they're probably doing it right now I'm not sure we can stop it." To that I said, "You can keep your Jeep".

I was able to remove 1 line item out of 6 in a very minor victory.

Fast forward to 2018 when I bought a Hyundai. After two previous horrible experiences with sleezy dealers I decided to buy online - I had a deal for thousands less than I could get at nearby dealerships (10 minutes of effort and no haggling to get there), nearly no "line items" and when I got to the dealer - I was out of there in under an hour.

I've done the same thing for this Jeep (thanks Granger). For less than 10 minutes of effort (putting together an email) I had a great deal, a grand total of $225 in line items (the least I've ever paid on any of the 4 cars I've bought) and absolutely no grief.

I'll never set foot on a lot again unless the deal has already been made.
I can wait a few months.
