Hi - we just purchased a 2023 Sahara 4xe on Friday that we received with 112 miles on it. After putting almost 100 miles on it this weekend we charged it for the first time last night using the provided Jeep level 1 charger. This morning when it was started the check engine light came on. It was not flashing and there was no message in the cluster display. The charger and charging lights were also normal and it seemed to charge to 99% overnight. Any idea what this could be? We have not put fuel in it yet but the dealer did before delivery on Friday. Thanks

Please check the gas cap, it could take a couple of drive cycles to clear if the problem.

Also, I had a transitory light happed to me when plugging charger into jeep before the wall. It went away after a day or so.

Enjoy your 4xe!

Thanks! We undid the gas cap and put it back on so I guess we will see if it clears. I am planning on bringing it to an AutoZone tonight for them to read the code and see what it is. My wife is the very sad one as it is her car and she has only had it 3 days and this happened. What do you mean by transitory light?

There's been a large string of bad gas caps it seems. We've got like 2-3 different TSBs to replace the cap or in some cases the cap and filler neck

The Charging failure light cleared itself, is what was meant.

Please post up the code when you pull it.
Will do - going tonight to get them to read it. We had no other messages or lights besides the check engine one. Thanks

The last time it would have been filled up was probably Thursday or Friday by the dealer. We haven't touched the gas cap since. Maybe it took so many miles or trips to trigger the CEL. It is weird though that it happened this morning after we charged it for the first time last night.

EVAP leaks can take multiple drive cycles to set. They don't always set right away and they're a 2 trip fault, meaning the system will have to fail twice before it turns the CEL on. It'll take 3 good trips for the light to disable itself and then ~50 before the code clears out of the system completely.

If the light has cleared don't worry about it, but if you do get it read then p0456 or P04EE are the codes that would point to the fuel cap being the issue.

Thanks for the tips. So it would take around 3 trips for the light to clear itself once the cap would be put on correctly?

Assuming it still doesn't leak even while on correctly, yes. Note a "trip" is considered a full warm up drive cycle followed by a complete cold soak (6-10 hours of engine off)

Anything we should check for and do to make sure the fuel cap is put on correctly?

Make sure the tether isn't getting caught under the cap itself. I've seen it happen a lot, and there was even a recall on earlier models to replace the tether with a shorter one since it was happening so much. Other then that, just tighten until it clicks.

Thanks - will look at it tonight and bring it to AutoZone to get the code. Appreciate it.

So per the Fix Finder at AutoZone it is CEL codes P04EE and P04EC both related to a small and large leak of the EVAP system. I'm assuming this is a good thing and it's the fuel cap causing issues.
