I don't understand why they would remove the BSG from the 2.0L. It was the main reason I got it.
I am curious about this too. I think that it’s a combination of syncing a bit closer the export Rubicon specs and likely some negative customer feedback regarding “complexity” on the 2.0T etorque on the top of the line Rubicon.

...My window sticker states engine built in Italy.
Does your engine have one cam or two? The Alfa engine has one - SOHC - the Jeep Hurricane engine has two - DOHC. It is confusing because they were initially building the Hurricane for the JL in Italy prior to starting up the Trenton assembly - see below. But it is still the US-designed Jeep engine, not the Alfa engine used in the Guilia and Stelvio. Once you can understand that there are two different engines it is less confusing.

The BSG offers a seamless "ESS" experience, at a great cost of circulation pumps, cooling lines, big 48 v lithium ion battery, a plethora of Sensors. The "mild hybrid " is NOT a propulsive motor, it rotates the engine from the front, gives about a half- rotation of wheel turn to start the engine. It works with the 8 spd auto to precisely time rpms for smooth shifts. The 48v battery can allow AC, or heat, lights, to operate for longer ESS intervals, however, the weight and complexity are difficult to maintain in an off road vehicle, meaning, higher warranty costs for FCA down the line.
By going "back" to the non BSG type of ESS, the engineers are paying attention to the off road heritage, keeping it simpler.

Good summary. This is why we see for 2020 2.0L BSG becomes "Sahara" only (renamed to eTorque) and the Rubi gets the 2.0L with conventional ESS.

So the article states that the initial 2.0 turbo were built in Italy, and that the new engine plant in Trenton will take over when it's finished. That implies that Italian 2.0s and US 2.0s for the Wrangler are one design, same engine. The article is last year's, but knowing that the engine only differs in point of origin, not specs, is reassuring.

I wonder why these engines are called Global Medium Engine...is there a clue here in the name?

It had always been called eTorque.

I have a Rubicon, I off-road. The eTorque works great. If the V6 had it when I ordered I would have gotten it instead.

The BSG "mild hybrid E torque " doesn't actually propel the JL, that's the "Mild" part of "hybrid"
It will actually move under electric power when the "Plug In" hybrid appears, hopefully with a decent range to make it worthwhile, like, 50 miles, minimum...

Im begining to think I like this on the Rubicon.
Me too. I’m big into mpg (although no, that’s not why I bought a Jeep...sigh), but I’d gladly give up a little low-end torque and a mpg or two for a simpler system.

I'm also curious to see how dropping the eTorque system will effect the driviblity and the hp/ft lbs?

I have been considering buying another JL for my daily driver / all weather toy.

eTorque does not change HP or Torque above 1500 RPM.

It doesnt add anything but it is still a parasitic device. Without having to charge that 48v battery with the eTorque generator I'd be willing to bet the wheel hp and tq would benefit, same as guys cutting out the AC for that little extra power. The question is how much do you get back?

Plus , weight savings from removing all the associated parts, 48v battery, cradle, BSG, pumps...
Probably 100lbs
