This engine is slated to be in the Rubicon for MY2020. Anyone know when this engine was first introduced, what other Jeeps its in and thoughts on its reliability?

I am told that this is the engine that is in many Jeeps exported from the US.

How long has it been around?

The engine is designated GME by FCA, that’s Global Medium Engine. It’s used in Alfa Romeos as well as various Jeep models. It’s been in production since 2016.

You can read about it here..,

It is a common misconception that the 2.0 Hurricane engine in the Wrangler is an Alfa design. This is not accurate, the Hurricane was designed by engineers in the US and is built in the US. The engines are rather dissimilar, SOHC versus DOHC and open deck block versus closed deck block being the two most obvious. They do share the same displacement. The Hurricane was introduced in the 2019 KL and the 2018 JL.

There are probably more of the 2.0s in the KL platform where it has been available for well over a year. There have been very few complaints about the engine, most owners love it. Of course, Pentastar owners consider it to be the anti-Christ.....

I’m always willing to be corrected but the article you linked to clearly states...

“ FCA builds another version of the 2.0L turbo for its Alfa Romeo luxury brand in Termoli, Italy”.

Isn't this the same as the current 2.0L just without BSG?

So how will this effect the ESS system operation?

The “new” 2.0 configuration in US/Canada will loose the 48v battery and cooling lines and will gain a motorcycle battery buried under the fuse box. Just like the 3.6. Rudolph hart in this thread indicates that this spec is the current Jeep export spec.

It seems the "new" 2.0 Turbo will be the same engine that has been in the Cherokee, NOT the current 2.0 Fiat turbo in the JL. That would seem to mean the 2.0 T in the JL for 2018, 2019 is now an Orphan , a 2 model year only engine ?? The Fiat is a DOHC, the US a SOHC ??
ENLIGHTENMENT ! Answered after reading more, same engine, different points of origin, now USA made that Trenton plant is up and running....

I don't understand why they would remove the BSG from the 2.0L. It was the main reason I got it.

Orphan?

Nah, the 2.0 etorque is still in the 2020 Sahara. And the 2020 Rubicon 2.0 ess engine is described as a “DOHC” on the build sheets, if that matters.
