Hello everyone. I’m new to the forum and recently purchased a 22 4xe. The engine kicked on during a cold start for the first time and there’s a high pitch knocking sound that happens. The noise doesn’t last but still unsettling. I’m familiar with unrefined sounds direct injected engines make during cold start but this seems different. I’m looking for advice from anyone familiar with this engine. Thanks for any info members can provide.

I think that’s the nature of the 2.0l. Mine makes noises like that for the first few minutes of operation…and has since it was new two years ago. That motor is great except for cold start operating noise….

I’m hearing more and more that is a normal characteristic. Thanks for the feedback.

Turbo doing what, exactly, since it should literally be doing nothing at idle. (IOW, I'm skeptical)

It happening only during cold starts leads me to think that something isn't getting lubricated properly and/or tight (or loose, depending on perspective) fitment before expansion.

This thread is a bit old now but did anything ever come of this? Still making the same noise? Engine or turbo blow up? Fix found?

I just bought a used '21 Sport (not 4xe or etorque but with 2.0T) and out of the dozen or so threads about various awful noises it makes, the sound in this video is exactly the noise mine makes. It seems to go away after a few minutes of driving so apparently heat/expansion related but it sounds bad coming out of the driveway or idling through a parking lot.

I conveniently bought it just past the power train warranty and of course it was warmed up before the test drive at the dealer so I didn't hear it until the next day. I've had this sort of dread feeling since after reading the fun people have with the 3.6 and rocker arms. The 2.0 doesn't seem to have such common failures so I get a little comfort from that but not much.

The 2.0 makes lots of noise on startup. The injectors are loud, the timing chain can rattle a bit, and the valve train is nosy. This sounds like valve train noise to me, like the lifters aren't fully pumped up. The noise should go away with some light load and increased oil pressure.

To be sure, I'd take it to a shop. If they say it's normal (in some instances, it can be-), for peace of mind it would be worth exploring an extended warranty for the powertrain via Mopar. The engine warranty is covered for 5 years/ 60k.
