I had my bubbling paint issue repaired while I was snow-birding in Florida. They repainted all four doors, removing the hinges and painting both sides, as well as the tailgate. All was done at no charge under warranty. We took it out to dinner for a friends birthday, it’s first trip since the bodywork, and while parked in town on a 25mph street, a drunk lady in a Range Rover sideswiped it, along with six other vehicles. She was also on her cell phone at the time. We had finished dinner (across the street) and paid, getting ready to leave when we heard what we thought was thunder… Repair estimate is over $8,000.

Man, that just sucks. I hope she got the ride in the back of the squad like she deserved. Drunk and on the phone... and we are worried about saving the planet for ourselves...

I'm asking this question because I don't know the answer. So, her insurance ends up paying to have your Jeep repaired, but now with CarFax, it'll show up as having been repaired. If you ever go to trade it in, they'll give you less of a trade-in allowance because of this. Is there any way to recover any of that "lost" money from the other drivers insurance company?

get that claim processed as fast as you can, that incident will likely exceed her policy limit... if she even has insurance.

Yes, it's called a lost value claim. Looks different depending on the insurance company but you can file for the money that is lost due your vehicle having an accident. Obviously doesn't apply if you're at fault but that isn't a concern in this case.

That's a good question. I've been a bit curious about this, as well.

"Luckily" every time I've had an accident (so far, always the other driver's fault) my car has always been totalled, so this hasn't come up for me.

3 totalled cars so far in my life, always from being rear ended ? I'll literally cry if it happens again in my new Wrangler. I am paying extra to have excellent insurance coverage way beyond what I think I'll ever need, just in case. Including uninsured motorist, aftermarket parts coverage, very high limits and low deductibles, etc.

we've only ever had it happen once, to my daughter's car (when she was just out of college). A 2-dr. Accura Integra, who's engine was on it's last legs (college girls rarely check their oil). Got rear-ended, fortunately, no one was injured, car was totaled, insurance company gave us $1600 (if was worth $400, if that, because of the engine). It all worked out great, but don't recomend doing this on purpose.

Hopefully!

A friend of mine actually had this exact same situation happen to him (sideswiped while he was parked on the street) and he successfully filed for the lost value on his truck. Then my wife had her vehicle totaled and we were in process of filing for lost value, then the insurance company came back and decided to total the vehicle instead.
