An unremarkable 2026 JLUR build

Wanting to document what we do to my wife's 2026 JLU Rubicon X. I didn't do a build thread for our 22 JTR and have realized that it would have been useful to have done so.

The day we bought it:

It stayed in the garage until we got back from vacation and the guy who ceramic coated my wife's car two years ago could come and paint correct / ceramic coat the JLUR.

It ended up hitting 117 degrees F that day in Phoenix while he was working on it. After the coating cured enough, drove the JLUR up to our cabin.

First mod is to add RedLine Tuning hood struts. Didn't add them to our JTR until well into that build, so nice not to have to deal with that stupid hood strut.

Today I ripped out the dealer installed GPS tracker / immobilizer:

It was tapped into the OE wiring harness in five or six places, plus a ground. It was allegedly "disabled", but the fuse wasn't pulled and I didn't want to take the chance of it screwing up and not "failing safe" but rather failing so that starting was disabled.

No, this was all in the passenger compartment in various places under the dash.

I only had to cut the one blue wire that ran over to the passenger footwell to tap into a wire over there. The vehicle was in the garage and I had disconnected the negative battery cables while I was doing this. Couldn't open the front passenger door wide enough to reach that spade terminal while it was in the garage, shelves in the way.

Most of the taps were under the steering column. The thing with the ribbon cable has an LED and a push button, they had screwed that into the trim panel under the steering column. All of the white connectors plugged into the big black box. The relay was electrical taped to the fuse holder. The black box and most of the bundled up wiring was stuffed behind the dash support behind the driver's side kick panel. I ended up removing the driver's side kick panel to make sure that there weren't any other wires tapped behind there before freeing up the black box and disconnecting the wiring from it.

I was relieved to see that it didn't mess with either of the CAN bus networks, the SGW module connectors or the OBD port wiring.

That is an absolute crime to an otherwise beautiful Jeep! Seriously, I would not tolerate wire taps into the wiring harness of a brand new $60k rolling computer.

Thank you for those details. I will look on the other side of the firewall. This appears to be a dealer installed hack job. Dont understand why they would bother. Maybe your Jeep is on a lease?

Loss prevention. I'd bet that every JL, JLU and JT on their lot had this done to it, if not every vehicle that delearship had in their inventory.

I'm at a loss as to why a dealership would install one of these. I thought the new jeeps had an app that did all of the GPS theft tracking and that jeep could disable the vehicle.

Well that sucks but it makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. Too bad that they are too lazy to remove all that crap for their customers.

Dealer pays less scumbag insurance if they install one of these on all $50K+ vehicles on their outside lot, especially Wranglers which tend to sit for a while. A nice little trick is to get the customer to pay for it with a window sticker addendum "Anti-theft disabling." Goes nicely with the 'leather guard", "true coat", "rim insurance", "lifetime warranty" and other pure profit junk items.

I recently bought a 392 Moab and wondering if this crap is under the dash. I haven't looked. Maybe today. But, I didn't have any upcharges, and in fact, got a large discount.

Sometimes the value is post-sale. The bank or leasing company would prefer their investment is trackable, just in case... ya know. If so, they would rather the customer not know its there.

In any event, I'm going out to my garage with a flashlight right now...
