Unless you're climbing an obstacle that's 8 feet across and flat then you're losing clearance. You could be crawling through rocks where the biggest rock is outside the frame but gets hung up on those rails. That would be a loss of clearance.
Good copy; thanks. I can now see how it’s a decision of how far to go with your protection without compromising the line you are taking.

I’ve heard that from others, but cannot wrap my mind around it, as I don’t do rock climbing in Florida. If it’s no lower than the frame, how does it lessen the clearance of the vehicle?

Here's a great example. If my rails hung down any lower I'd be stuck on that boulder.

Anybody have an experience with the Mopar Performance Rock Rails (PN 82215129AB)? From the pics on the Quadratec and Mopar sites they look like they stick out farther than the standard Rubi rock rails. I was looking for something to protect from kicked up road stuff and or doors opening, but did't want full side steps.
They came on my JLU Sahara (Why?, not sure). I had to order the Mopar side steps (EBay) myself. I switch to the rock Rails when I'm on a trail and then re-install the side steps for town use as the rock rails will not protect my doors as well. They do stick out about an inch or two for a slight step but I don't trust the to protect me from kids opening Mom's car doors.

Up here in Saskatchewan, you will be stopped by the police in your Wrangler if you don.t have mud flaps. You'll get a warning and so much time to install them, and then you'll go to the cop shop and show them. It's all because we have lots of gravel roads and rocks on our highways that were leading to a lot of windshield claims by other drivers. Our highways are not as nice as yours down there. The same goes for trucks.

I installed LOD Destroyer Series rock rail/step up. I often hear gravel stones hitting underneath so imagine they are catching them before doors.

Which roof rack/basket did you go with?

I have a Sahara that came with steps but sold them and picked up the Mopar performance rails (from a Moab take off) and couldn’t be happier. Still enough of a step to be useful and look much better imo, but I haven tried them as rock rails yet.

Thanks - great pics, performance rails are perfect for what I want. They stick out far enough for some protection but not too far, full sided steps just don't look right to me.

Are the performance rails the same as rock rails?
Not really.

they are likely more protective than the standard Rubicon rail but they are still body mount rails (not frame mount). If you are looking for “real” rockrail protection, you should consider frame mount options. That said, if you are looking for wider rails that can function as a step and also help prevent your tires shooting rocks at your rear fender/doors, these rails likely work fine. And, if you are going to do some mild off-roading, even with a few boulders, these probably will work just fine..... certainly as good as the stock Rubicon rails.

Also, consider: are you really going to go places to slam/scrape your Jeep against rocks and boulders? If “yes”, there are likely more protective rails for you to buy. If “no”, these and a bunch of other body mount step/rails would be good options too.

I went with Roam frame mount slider steps ...... I am 92.358478% sure that I will never need them to hold me off a rock. But, there is that 7% chance that I just might.........
