You can get a TRD off-road 4Runner for $40-42k. I think when you build a Sahara to the same spec, the 4R ends up a little cheaper, but there is definitely more flexibility with packaging with the JL.

With the 4R you'll get bulletproof reliablity, more room, better on-road ride. The JL gives you more offroad capability, a top that comes off, much better tech.

My biggest 4Runner complaint is that they're still selling the same 4Runner since 2010. That's the kind of shit I only let the Wrangler get away with

I am OK with them not having upgraded the drivetrain, since I think it's solid but the interior really needs a facelift, when they did the exterior they should have done the interior too, improved materials a bit, better nav, cluster.

Much more towing with the 4runner too. BTW, my Rubicon with tow, led, infotainment, and a few other things is being sold to me at just above $42k

My sister just got one of those, it sucks... not as refined as you would think and certainly not fun... she actually regrets not getting another Sahara, but this time a JL....she did trade her GC summit on it and she has told me 20x that she’s prefers that as well.

If convertible wasn't so important to me there are a lot options between $40k-$50k that i would cross-shop.

But you can't take the top off any of them so they are out.

And I've spec'd a pretty nice Sport S JLU below $40k.

Worst thing going for the 4 runner is it is not made in the USA. I will not buy any vehicle unless it assembled in the USA and uses at least 50% parts from the USA. First reason why I ever bought a Tundra and a Sienna they were made in the USA the second is reliability.

To everyone that keeps posting a variation of this: we are all aware that the Jeep Wrangler, in Rubicon trim, is the most offroad capable suv on the market, and very likely ever offered by a major manufacturer.

The things that compromise its road manners lead to this.

As such a 4Runner is a better daily driver if you just want a less flashy non convertible suv. That IFS, among other things, leads to superior road handling and comfort. Tradeoffs.

Crass comments aside, what the heck do you expect on a forum dedicated to FANS of the wrangler? We like wranglers, that’s why we’re here. Do you show up to Utah Jazz games and wonder why nobody cheers for the Lakers?

Lol, gotten that one a few times. I also like Wranglers--that's why I'm here. If you wanna shit on every "let's talk about the pros and cons of the wrangler" thread, be someone's guest.

There's some other Wrangler enthusiasts here who also sometimes just wanna talk about them objectively. So the loud fanbois can keep doing their thing, and people like me who love them yet also recognize shortcomings will keep doing our thing.

There's nothing wrong with choosing to not display a massive bias.

That said, didn't they move Pentastar production to Mexico? That's a bit of a hit to me, but an 80% US vehicle is still a US vehicle to me.

This is probably the closest SUV model to the Sahara / Rubicon

The 4Runner is a really nice vehicle, although it could seriously use an update.

If they announced that the 2019 model was a new 6th gen, I would've put off my JL order to take a closer look but it looks like the 5th gen will continue into 2020 or 2021.

That said I test drove a manual 2017 Tacoma and hated that transmission so much I didn't want a manual Tacoma anymore

with todays pricing many like myself are buying preowned, still not cheap but doable!! no manual means no sale to me!!! get rid of the distracting + costly junk + prices could do down, radio + heater is all i need except the afore mentioned manual shifter!!!

These trails where it's easier to walk than drive are pretty silly, IMHO. Save $50k and just walk the damn thing; faster and you won't trash your skid plates/bumpers.

The new JLUR is amazing which is why we are all here. The manual trans, the unmatched offroad performance, the fact that the top comes off, coupled with a nice interior, sound system, heated seats and steering come together to create a truly amazing lifestyle vehicle. With that said, I still think it is overpriced. Seeing what the new 2017 LR Discovery (offroad-capable) and Velar for mall crawling offers for under $50k really makes you wonder. Land Rover stuffed A LOT of excess and luxury at that price point in these.

I know we are here cause we want this and not that but the price when compared to what else is out there seems a touch crazy. A stripped JLUR for 40k+ comes with less interior amenities than come standard in new economy cars.
