Let me guess, you voted for Hillary and are still upset?
No.

Hey if you’re okay with designers and engineers making stupid choices for no good reason, whatever. But I’m not. I prefer the vehicles I buy to be... I don’t know, well thought-out and not just making changes for change’s sake.

That’s my whole point with the Grand Cherokee shifter thing. It’s like the designers went to some high tech design school that taught them all the wrong lessons.

I don't know or care about anyone else's opinion. I'm just talking $hit because I think it's funny when people get worked up on message boards.

I hear you, I do the same thing sometimes. Usually when I’m drunk and/or bored........

Is this one of the AutoPark threads resurrected from the dead?

I'm still mad about AutoPark. F the engineers who added this to the vehicle and the horses they rode in on.

It's pointless and stupid on the JL. They did it on the Grand cherokee because the idiot from Star Trek ran over himself by getting out with his GC in gear and it ran him over, killing him. The Grand Cherokee has a ratchet like shifter and it's pretty easy to leave in gear if you aren't used to it. The JL has a normal shifter though so they should pull that out of the TCM's code.
Ratchet? As in a twist knob? My mom has a 2014 and it isn't a twist knob.

I think this was the Gear Selector that was in Anton Yelchin's Jeep. You push it forward or back to select Reverse, Drive Ect. It will return to its central position regardless of if you are in park, reverse drive or neutral and this is what got people confused. Most ZF equipped vehicles (Chrysler, BMW, Rolls Royce ect) at this time did not have a traditional gear selector. It wasn't until people started getting hurt that it was realized that this particular design was a bad one.

This is what they look like in BMWs, Not very intuitive, but at least Park is a button that stands out.

I don't understand the confusion with the Jeep one. My mom's has that. She's 76 and never had an issue with it. It's just a lot of American shifters. Maybe I'm missing something, but I've never had a problem with it. Heck, it even lights up what gear it's in, as well as shows it on the dash. People just need to pay attention.

The auto park sucks, though. I moved it for her, opened the door to check my positioning and it went into park...but I was still moving a little. It is a stupid option. It should just bing like crazy at you.

The trouble is, you can't tell by the feel of the position like with most traditional selectors. People have their muscle memory and just didn't adapt before some bad mistakes were made. The auto park corrected this and I agree with it in this application. Now that better gear selectors have been used, It does seem a bit overly cautious now.

I guess I've never ran into that. Granted, I don't have as much driving time in one. I do remember how going into park felt like a clunk, or something. It definitely had a different feel than the other gears.

I haven't driven a Grand Cherokee before so I really am not the expert at it, but seeing how the selector operates I can kind of see how it can be screwed up if you're not paying attention.

It’s the lawsuit society we live in. Manufacturers cover themselves with nanny systems and warning labels. My 60 Fury convertible didn’t even have park. You parked in neutral and set the brake. And you knew to keep it correctly adjusted.

Yes, and that's another thing that people tend to do is refuse to use the parking brake...

Most people don’t even call it that anymore. They call it an emergency brake, even though I doubt any manufacturer calls it that.

Yep, people will trust that tiny little pawl to keep their big diesel truck from moving on a hill... and think locking the rear brakes at speed is for emergencies rather than just using the regular brakes...

I'd better get off this soap box before I really start a rant. :giggle:
