I just picked up my new JL Rubicon a few days ago and am already hearing a strange whine during acceleration. When the whine first started, it was very quiet so I didn't think anything of it. Today, the whine is extremely loud and occurs every time I accelerate and am at higher RPMs. The best way to describe the noise is when you reverse extremely fast... the whine of the gears spinning quickly is very similar to the noise I hear each time I accelerate normally in Drive.

I originally thought it could just be a wet belt or something to that effect, however, even after letting the car sit for a day the noise is still present and just as prominent.

Has anyone experienced this whining noise or know what it could possibly be? I am really hoping it is not something with the transmission since the car is only a week old.

Hi timbo1213,
I understand your concern. If you decide to bring your Wrangler into the dealer to have this addressed, you can also send us a private message and we'd be happy to offer you any assistance you may need while your vehicle is being serviced.

Hello and welcome! occasionally with mine I notice a "whirring" sound might be considered a "whine" I usually notice it going downhill coasting sometimes it will stop if I put my foot on the brake? I also notice it will go away if I shift into neutral. Not sure what it is I just hope the jeep is just learning my driving technique, if not will have it addressed during my first oil change service only have 1500 miles on mine and a month old

Are either of your JLs the 2.0T engine? Another member reported his 2.0T engine making a whining sound. Like a belt turning a supercharger. Or possibly a belt turning the e-Torque? Or do you think the noise is the engine revving and the turbo whistling? I think he is going to try making a video so others can hear it.

Can you check your window sticker to see if you have the Active Noise Control?

It’s the scream of money being ripped from your pocket during the decreased mpg of hard acceleration :giggle:

I don't have the 2.0T, I have the 3.6L V6 with 8 speed auto.

I do think I now know what the problem is, however... and its not good. I took a look under the Jeep the other day and noticed a huge pool of oil... the transmission is leaking everywhere. The entire underside of the pan is soaked with oil. The whine noise is definitely the sound of gears grinding together. The Jeep has not been sent to service yet, my appointment in next Friday (with a tow). The car is a total of 5 days old and if the transmission is leaking the gears have to be damaged from improper lubrication. Taking it up with FCA now since the transmission must have been improperly assembled and is causing the leakage.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully they will take care of you. Sent you a PM. Good Luck.

I remember someone on here about March or April having a very bad leak, with pictures, but don’t remember any more. Maybe you can search for that thread.

I just saw a YouTube video of a JL owner who had this noise and it was the transmission. He hasn’t seen it since July 6th, because the transmisssion is on backorder. It needs to come directly from the transmission maker, not Jeep.

I know EXACTLY the whining noise you’re referring to, @timbo1213. I’m having the same issue with my ā€˜18 JLUR.

It’s a high pitched whine that sounds like a belt or pulley on its way out. A guy at work asked if my Jeep was supercharged.

The whine becomes louder and more intense as you increase RPMs. I’ve isolated this to the engine as it doesn’t matter if I’m at speed, parked, clutch in/out, neutral in the driveway, rolling. It’s directly and ONLY tied to engine RPM. Not speed or transmission speed/input.

On my first dealer visit for this they acknowledged the noise, replaced the belt tensioner and pulley, and put on a new belt.
Said it’s good to go! I roll of the lot, no change. Phoenix is still screamin.

Second visit, after replacing the alternator and finding the noise still exists, they try to tell me ā€œthis is the natural sound of the engine just telling you it’s time to shift...ā€ which is insulting and completely incorrect at the very least.

Third visit, they opened a star case. I’m out of town but they call to let me know the star case is completed and ā€œit’s just supposed to sound like thatā€. And a service tech said they compared it to a Jeep on the lot.

I call complete BS on this. I remember the first 8k miles of my Jeep NOT making this noise at all. It gradually crept in over a couple of days and seems to be getting worse slowly but surely.

Any others with this issue, please chime in. I feel like I’m battling uphill against a stubborn and undertrained service dept.

@JeepCares What can I do from here?

I know my Jeeps and engines in general, and this noise is not normal at all.
