Back in the day when I had a manual, I always put it in reverse when pointing downhill. Is that not a thing people normally do?

I don't know, man. It's not something I've ever done. I've always just put it in 2nd and set the parking brake. The engine will turn over in a fwd gear or reverse. I just didn't set the parking brake. My JK, Camaro, Vette have all been manuals and I've been parking them the same way since I bought this house in 2006. I made a mistake. That coupled with high winds and 4.88 gears, the Jeeps weight just simply turned the motor over enough to let it go down hill. If you watch the video, it took 17 minutes for it to roll. 25 feet and then it finally turned the motor enough to hit the shed.
I've seen this debated. Some, like myself, say the lowest gear that opposes the slope, as I mentioned earlier. Others say the lowest gear regardless of slope, so Reverse. Some are dead-set against leaving it in gear, thinking it is too hard on the gears and transmission.

Being a MN farmboy, I can relate to not using the brake. We never set it growing up because it would inevitably freeze up on you. I've never used reverse simply because the engine should never be given the opportunity to run backwards, but it's really just the habit. I habitually set it in 2nd, pull the brake, and shut the jeep off. The extra weight of all the mods plus adding 4.88's, just makes it easier to turn the motor over through the transmission. The parking brake actually holds really well. There's been a noticeable amount of cable stretch since new and probably could use an adjustment, but I used it a lot in the mountains out in Colorado. I personally will not use my parking brake. It may be different on the JL (I don't have mine yet) but the JK hand brake is shit and cannot hold it at all. Even if it could, I won't use it in the winter months out of fear of the brakes freezing and being torn off once proceeding (heard a few horror stories, so I prefer to just avoid) and I don't want to get in the habit in the warmer months then forget to shake it for winter.
