So i've been battling this for a few weeks now. Does anyone else have this tire carrier installed without any rattles?

I've spent hours trying to adjust it to stop the rattles but have been unsuccessful. It also creaks when opening and closing the door.

I believe the rattle comes from the hinges themselves as they have up and down play in them and there's no way to tighten them.

I'm really just looking for some tips and tricks from anyone that's successfully installed one of these without any rattles. The first time I called Ace a few weeks ago, I got somebody super helpful on the phone but the last few times i've called all i've been told is it shouldn't be rattling and I should be able to adjust it to stop the rattle.

Appreciate any help! I've attached a pic of the area that it sounds like the rattle is coming from.

I'm sorry you're having this issue. Is it possible to take a video of the rattle and email it over to [email protected]? That might help us diagnose it. If not, can you DM us your number and I'll have someone get in touch to try and resolve this.

Thank you,

ACE

Sent you my phone number. The small creaks and rattles are easy to reproduce while standing there and shaking the wheel, where the mount meets the hinge has up and down play in it. When driving, if you hit a decent size bump, you can actually see the wheel moving in the rear view mirror, it's rather unsettling and embarrassing to have a passenger.

I've watched the install video probably a dozen times now to see if there's something I've missed and have had 2 local offroad shops take a stab at it. Both said everything is tight and installed properly.

Thanks for sending that over.

Adam will be in touch tomorrow and we'll get this figured out for you.

Thank you,

Really?! Bummer!

I haven't had any issue with mine. When I first installed mine, I torqued down the two pivot bolts that attach the carrier to the hinges to the point that the carrier and tailgate barely moved. There was no way that I'd get any rattles. I have since loosen up the bolts about a 1/4 turn and thoroughly lubed up the grease fittings. It now swings freely but it's tight enough to prevent any unwanted movement.

I'd be curious if you just don't have your bolts tight enough. Or maybe you don't have the shoulder of the bolt going down through the bottom holes of the hinge.

Interesting. You're referring to these bolts correct? They're as tight as I can possibly make them, I'm not sure if this pic is helpful but you think it's worth removing and reinstalling to make sure the shoulder went all the way down?

Yeah, those are the bolts I'm referring to. If the shoulder bolt didn't go all the way through, that may cause the rattle. And those bolts would be something fairly easy to check or rule out. I'd say that it is worth loosening them up and double checking. If you do that, It's also worth checking that your two washers on each bolt on the bottom side are aligned properly. Make sure the larger ID washer goes on first and is on the shoulder of the bolt.

The other thing to check would be the connection for the tire stanchion (or whatever it's called) to carrier. I'm referring to the assembly that you actually bolt the spare to. There are the 4 bolts that attach the stanchion to the carrier, the larger telescoping adjusting bolt inside the stanchion, and the smaller telescoping lock bolt on top of the stanchion. Make sure all of those are tight.

Thanks for the advice, I'll try to spend some time adjusting it tonight. How tight did you make the large telescoping bolt? This bolt moves the tire in and out, I just tightened it until the tire looked snug against the mount. Did you actually torque this bolt down?

I'm definitely going to loosen/remove the nuts and make sure the shoulders of the bolt went all the way through, would make for a simple fix for sure.

I just snugged the large telescoping bolt to the point where the tire hit the rotopax mounts and they started to flex back. I didn’t torque it down though.

Did you look at the heim joint? Maybe try to shorten it a bit to try to pull the carrerir closer to the tailgate.

Hopefully it’s a quick fix for you. There are only a handful of pieces and bolts, so it should be something you can track down.

Unfortunately didn't get to mess with it last night and likely won't have time again till this weekend. But this thread has given me hope that I can figure it out.

I stopped turning the telescoping bolt as soon as the tire touched the rotopax mount, so I'll tighten that and try to shorten the helm joint a bit more. I'll update this thread this weekend, thanks for all the advice!

Did you get the rattling to stop? I need a tire carrier ASAP, and this is the one I like most that is mostly available.

I've spent many many hours playing with this. It doesn't rattle near as much as it did when I made this thread but it still rattles.

Quite frankly, I've given up and I'm currently just living with an annoying rattle over large bumps. I'll likely switch out to a bumper/tire carrier solution this summer.

I spent some time today trying to solve my rattle. It really seems to be related to the heim joint, so I tried to remove as much slack as possible. If you tighten it down with the tailgate wide open, you'll have a bit of a gap when you close the tailgate. That gap allows the tire portion to move a few millimeters towards (and then away) from the tailgate, which seems to be the cause of the rattle I had.

Try this: if you slam the tailgate shut, do you hear a rattle? I did, so I climbed into the Jeep with the tailgate closed and adjusted the heim joint that way. With that now shortened to take up the gap, I don't notice a rattle when I close the tailgate. Hopefully this means the rattle I was having earlier today is gone.

Michigan roads are fucking terrible. We have trails that are smoother than some of our main roads. With that said, I installed the Ace Stand Alone Tire Carrier a couple days ago. I have no rattles. I adjusted the heim joint with the tailgate closed. Make sure the hinges that attach the tub of the Jeep inside the back of the Jeep are tight. Personally, I would start with checking the the six bolts that hold the hinges to the tube.and work my way out.

Also, what is tight to one person is not tight to another. Did you use a torque wrench or just say this feels tight to me? I always use a torque wrench because I am ham fisted and brake bolts by over tightening them. and I am sure that there are people that are on the other side of the spectrum that thing a bolt is tight at 30 ft pounds of torque.

By the way, I love the Ace tire carrier.
