May seem like a stupid question...But how fast can I drive while I'm in 4H? I'm planning on driving Highway 50 to Tahoe in snow and curious to know.

There's generally a max speed at which you should shift from 2H to 4H or 4H to 2H (e.g. keep it under 60), but there's not really a max speed at which you can travel in 4H. You'll be fine traveling in 4H at the same speed you'd make the trip in 2H. Just remember it's a part-time system and it's not recommended to drive on blacktop. There needs to be some wheelslip possible to avoid binding the drivetrain.

While I'm not familiar with Hwy 50, the answer to that question probably depends more on road conditions than the vehicle. The owners manual states the preferred shifting speed between 2H and 4H is 0 to 45 mph, but does not specify a max driving speed. However, if you are in 4H, my guess is road conditions are probably conducive to not going much above that anyway. I have seen guys claim to have driven 70+...but not sure why you would want to. Take your time....enjoy the view....and don't try to set any personal arrival times. :like: Just my opinion.

You can go as fast as the Jeep can go in 4H, but that doesn't mean you should. Here's another stupid question: Why do you want to go fast on a snow embedded Hwy 50 towards Tahoe anyway? That's just dumb

Slow down on snowy roads. Just because you have four wheel drive doesn't mean that you have total breaking control. You can still lose control accelerating in four wheel drive also. Here's a tip..... If you're in a hurry to get to Tahoe and you're driving on a snowy highway 50, leave a lot earlier so that you get there in one piece, and you won't kill anyone else with wreck less driving.

Most often, while driving in the snow, its the four wheel drive vehicles that I see in the ditch or involved in wrecks.... All probably because they wanted to see how fast they could go in 4H. Seriously, be safe.

I'm thinking if it's bad enough you need 4H then it's bad enough you shouldn't be worrying about how fast you can go

There are two points to make here. One is that you can drive as fast as conditions will safely allow in 4H. The other is that if conditions are clear enough that you are tempted to go normal highway speeds, you don't need 4WD.

If chains are required, the speed limit is 35. Even for 4x4 without chains.

Most manuafactures are universal on this and state a max speed of 55mph. Like others say, if you are driving 55 in 4hi, you’re either crazy or you don’t truly need to be in 4hi.

A speed limit is specified only for shifting. After shifting, you're good to go so long as you are driving safely. (Which is almost always under 55mph)

Just in case it has not been said; Jeep says in the owners manual that "the preferred shifting speed would be 0 to 45 mph" and it will shift better if you let off the accelerator briefly as you make the shift

Yes, and you should also have some amount of slippage of traction. You really shouldn’t drive on dry pavement in 4h or 4L. It is not very good for the drivetrain.

I say it all the time. 4wd =/= 4 wheel stop.

I believe all Rubicons are limited to 97 mph in 4H (or 2H). At least, my two door is. Wouldn't surprise me if the 4 door is set higher though.

I drive 20 mi to work 5 days a week, earlier this past fall we had quite a few downpours on my drive into work. I put it in four high just because I figured it was better to be safe than sorry. One of those times it downpoured for about 10 minutes of my 20 minute drive, and then it just stopped raining. I got the JLUD up to 87 miles an hour in four high. Didn't seem to have any issues, so I think really you can get away with whatever you're willing to do.

But yeah like most people say if you're putting it in four high you're probably not going to be looking to haul a** anywhere!

Thats really not a very good idea. Water on the road isn’t a good reason to be in 4WD.
