When I put my jeep in 4H from 2H i get very bad sounding clunks from my axels. It also makes my steering weird and hard to turn and it takes a lot of gas to go backwards. However there arent any issues once I start driving.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are on a high grip surface like a paved road. If so it's possible to damage the drivetrain when turning as the axles and driveshafts bind due to differences in turning radius. 4-hi in a part time transfer case should only be used on low grip surfaces.

I only have used 4H on snowy/icy roads, would that still be a “high grip surface”

4H makes the steering more tough cause you now are in 4wd. As horrible as it sounds the clunking is a Jeep thing. I typically shift around 10mph, using neutral then drive once engaged and it’s a lot easier when warm than cold.

Even “if” you can see the pavement, if it has black ice or frost, your good to run 4 hi. Just be sure to be coasting while shifting in and out, no braking, turning or accelerating while shifting until fully in or out of 4x4. Otherwise the rest of the noises, clunking and hopping while turning tight are normal on slippery surfaces as well.

I think clunk is normal.

Can you crawl under your jeep, and grip your driveshaft with both hands, turn either way see what that sounds like 2h and 4h? Also take to the dealer.
