Theres rust on the top, space between steel bumper and grillAt the risk of sounding dumb, what am I looking at?
ThanksIf you are referring to the brown spots in the weld seam, that is most likely slag from the welding process. Slag is not rust, but if the slag flakes off it will leave the weld exposed to the elements and it will most likely rust unless treated.
If you further inspect your frame, you will most likely see all sorts of slag in your welds. Better yet, maybe don’t look. Thanks
So curious - if I find this on my Wrangler should I just ignore it or do something about it?This is you:

It’s on mine but according to that FCA document it’s normal and if you take it in and complain according to that FCA document “no repair required”. So they will turn you away.So curious - if I find this on my Wrangler should I just ignore it or do something about it?
I take my new vehicles to lineX and get the rust proofing and undercoating along with the paint sealer and fabric protectors. In the rust/salt belt, so we try to keep that crap at Bay.So curious - if I find this on my Wrangler should I just ignore it or do something about it?
I don't go to that extent, but I do concern myself with rust and do attempt to minimize it. But that publication makes it sound like it's something different (slag) that rust-proofing wouldn't prevent anyway. So is the slag just a cosmetic issue or will it spread like rust?I take my new vehicles to lineX and get the rust proofing and undercoating along with the paint sealer and fabric protectors. Slag only appears on welds. It doesn’t grow or spread. It’s more or less impurities that come to the surface during the welding process that paint won’t stick to. If it breaks off, there is unprotected steel underneath that WILL need painting or it will rust. But slag itself is just cosmetic. On a lot of things, slag is chipped off with a tool before painting, but I guess FCA considered this an unnecessary step.I don't go to that extent, but I do concern myself with rust and do attempt to minimize it. Unneccessary step only because there is so much of it! I honestly think when you first receive your JL it might look great but after awhile the factory coating/paint starts to flake off the slag and that’s when you really start to notice it. Hopefully Tower (who welds the frames) has improved their welding techniques to reduce slag in later builds.Slag only appears on welds. It doesn’t grow or spread. That doesn't sound so bad, much less annoying than rust. Thanks!Slag only appears on welds. It doesn’t grow or spread.
