Guys I have a local dealer trying to make a deal with me. They say they have no problem selling me a car at nonprofit but will not sell one and pay me. I know some of you guys that have gotten under invoice know more about this. What do I tell him? He doesn’t pay “invoice” right...there’s holdback?

Thanks guys

First off, no dealer ‘pays’ anything. That’s ridiculous. I ordered my Unlimited Sport at 5% under invoice, but it was from a ‘high volume’ dealer. That was key. I had gone to a different dealer previously who could not match the 5% deal, cause they were smaller apparently. Btw this is in the Phoenix area. There are like a dozen Jeep dealers in the valley lol. If you have options I’d shop around, or tell this dude you want 5% under invoice and see if he plays ball.

Yea that’s what I did, let’s see what he says. Worst case I’ll buy from out of state and pay to ship it.

Why even get into the percentage game with the dealer? Use the order guide to figure out how you want your vehicle configured and what the MSRP and FWP pricing is. Then, if 5% under invoice is really your goal, simply do that math to get what that price is. Tell the dealer you want to buy a Jeep with that config for that price and you are ready to make that deal now. If you get into the "this % discount" or "what kind of payments are you looking for?" you are being forced to play their game.

Agree with the advice above. If you’re willing to buy out of state, you’ll have more chance of getting a better price.

Went to four dealerships in the Baltimore/DC areas and they all told me to take a hike when I tried to negotiate. Wranglers are flying off the lots here. Ended up ordering at invoice.

See below...

Debbie at Beck Jeep in Palatka (5 hours north more or less) for 5.3% under invoice
There is a ton of info on our forum about under invoice pricing. I saw you are from Miami. This may give you leverage with your local dealer or you may need a road trip to pick up your new Jeep. Remember to go for the Tread Lightly discount.

I got them to give me 5% under and their dealer fee is 899 versus other dealers 300-600. They are 10 minutes from me so I figured I save the trip and it evens out at the end knowing it’s a local dealer.

I'm glad it worked out. I am biased to come to the defense of the dealer but it is conceivable that some dealerships wouldn't clear profit at 5% under invoice while others who move lots of product, and get incentives from FCA for doing so, will.

You got the best of both worlds: price and proximity. But any notion that you'll be treated better with service from the place you bought from is in my opinion something that generally proves exaggerated.

I live in Metro NY. I bought from Koons in VA at 5% below invoice and was very happy I did. They are a very reputable dealership by not only my account, but that of many others on teh board, who has their act together, and getting there with public transportation was, for me, trivial. My local dealer would only do invoice.

I'm of the opinion that the only factors in these cases is one's own personal cost of getting to and back from a distant dealer, the deal they'll give you, and their reputation to smoothly meet their promises on that deal.

5% under invoice, before the doc fee, is a savvy buyers starting point IMHO. I ended up at 7.5% under, before the doc fee, on a Wrangler bought out of dealer inventory.

I feel that your best dealing technique is email/text/phone and you don’t show up in person until the deal is 100% hammered out and you have it in hand with the sales managers signature on it.

How long ago did you order? Criswell is selling ordered 2019's for 7%-under invoice with Tread Lightly. 6%-under invoice without TL. They are in the DC area about a hour from Annapolis.

Umm, yeah, but that in no way addresses what I said. Absolutely be aware of what those prices are, what the market is seeing, and figure out your desired price point. My point was that people that start out by engaging the dealer in the game of "I want x% below invoice" are already losing by playing their game. Once you know what the price you want is just talk $, not percentages off of things the dealership holds. If 5% under invoice for your desired config ends up being $44K then you just say I'm ready to sign a deal today for $44K.

As a buyer you want to be able to justify your stance. Percentages off MSRP or percentages off invoice do exactly that.

Do you know how many jerkoffs car dealers see who chose arbitrary discounts with absolutely no rational thought behind them? If you don’t.. go sell cars for a week. That’s the customer who’ll end up buying on the dealers terms (in the unlikely event he buys at all).

I just can’t agree with that you’re espousing, since there are legions of us on this forum- savvy buyers all- who’ve gotten far below market deals by doing exacly what you’re saying not to do. I did. You’ll meet lots of others who did too. I’m not saying there’s only one way to buy a car, I’m just saying there’s a “basic strategy” like in black jack, that’ll make things easier for you and the dealers.

This is unequivocally true. The dealer is a negotiating partner, not an adversary (despite how some dealerships make it feel). They need to know where you're coming from, and the percent below invoice strategy is the way to index yourself to other deals / dealerships.

That said, when I placed my order, we were both good with 7% below invoice. Everybody happy. But the number quoted was 5.25% below invoice. In my case, it was an honest error on the dealer's part; we went through the math on the phone, found the error in the calculation (a typo), and I placed my order that day. But my point is that you can't rely on "X% below invoice" to resolve the deal on its own. You gotta know all your numbers...
