My ram 2500 6.7 pulling 10klbs runs at 195 degrees, My wifes pilot runs at 180-200. Most cars will run right around 200. An additional 25 degrees for just putsing around town is pretty high. Now step on it and watch it climb to 230, 235. Heat is one of the main ways to kill an engine.
Diesels run cooler than gas engines in general so I'm not sure that's a good basis for comparison. If 225-235 was "too hot" don't you think we'd see more engine failures across all cars that run those temperatures? I think modern engines have the ability to run hotter, and I think there are folks who see a good opportunity in selling fans/ fan controllers based on the suspicion that modern temps are "too hot".

Fair point about diesel's, and I can't say that your wrong about the temps either. This is going to be one of those viewpoints that can be different for everyone. For me its too hot and wanted to run cooler to help limit possible issues. It might do something, it might not but what it did do was create peace of mind for me. And that was good enough.

From my experience the 2.0L tends to pop the head gasket at the first instance of overheating. We've done a lot due to the prevalence of coolant leak locations on the engine (Water outlet, bottle, T-junctions)

Relative to a head gasket concern/issue, my 2.0 has been in the shop 5 times for coolant related issues. Yes, all the ones mentioned in this thread. The head gasket was the most recent, although they did not entirely specify, they just replaced the whole motor. Mine was covered under warranty as it only has 44k miles. I have a lemon law claim filed in court and they just offered $10k and I keep the jeep. My attorney says 15-20k is not uncommon. Don't know if this helps/hurts, but this has been my experience.

That's great news. I know they are notorious for coolant issues. I drive around with a back up bottle and coolant.

On the longer road trip coming up i’m going to start bringing back up heater core lines and coolant reservoirs. Those are the two failures i’ve had relating to coolant, head gasket knock on wood no issues.

Heater core line exploded when I did a pull, it got to about 220 before I got off in a safe spot and shut it off. Coolant reservoir didn’t split, but I touched the return line and it just broke off shooting coolant out at me lol. So the gf and I may be driving to texas to see some family and you bet your ass i’m gonna keep some spares in the back.

Update, they replaced the motor under warranty and 2 days later, the new water pump was leaking from the freeze plug. Took it back, they replaced the water pump and it is leaking again from somewhere. Now they want to get the area rep involved. Been waiting 2 weeks with no response. Service tech said bring it in today which I did so they could see if it is something simple. Nate, the service manager, then said he is not touching the jeep until the area rep is there, perhaps another 2 weeks. So that is another 4 weeks I can't drive the jeep and I'm still paying $892/month. You can't make this up. My advice to anyone considering a Jeep or any product from Stellantis, run far away!

This is a very old thread. But just wanted to pop in and say my TJ 4.0 ran at 210 on the dot regularly and was normal operating temp. Just posting for anyone doing research.

225 isn’t all that serious on a small displacement turbo 4.

Saw this old thread come up-
Just wanted to comment and say that my 2024 Rubicon 4xe had a leaking head gasket at 14,000 miles.

Oil was streaming down the block. Took 31 days to get the jeep fixed. This is the second attempt to fix the leak, first one was the timing cover which was resealed but the leak continued.

Hope this fixes it... but I do not care that much because I am pursuing potential lemon law.

My 2015 Jetta Tdi runs at 225. No overheating problems. The fan comes on as needed.

Oil usually doesn’t leak in the event of a head gasket failure.

Where was it leaking from?

It was streaming out the driver side front of the engine. Previously misdiagnosed as a timing leak.

I'm not so sure about keeping it after all these issues so I might try to trade it out for a 3.6.

Ah yes. The 3.6 that has undertorqued heads from the factory and has way more HG failures than the 2.0T.

YMMV but I personally stayed away from
The 3.6 for that reason

As part of my trail kit, I have recently added a length of 5/8" and 3/4" heater hose. There's a lot of connections between pipes that size on a 3.6L.
