Carmax job is to buy low and sell for a profit. They and other dealers are only going to give you book value. Want more for your car, sell it yourself.

Seems that JL's have more discounts than the JK's used to have, from what I see. This may translate into more depreciation from sticker the first year, which is not what people who have been buying JK's are used to. As vehicles get more expensive, the depreciation % starts to sting a bit more since the $ value is higher.
Exactly . My cheap JK $25K has Appreciated 20% to $30K in 2 years , based on used car prices being asked by dealers .

Doubtful the discounting individual dealers are doing on JL’s will have any impact since it’s not a nationwide thing that all dealers are doing. Depreciation related to discounting really only comes into play when manufacturers are offering rebates to move inventory or drive volume.

What a used car dealer asks is not what it sells for. Just like a new car MSRP isn’t what it sells for.

Wranglers don’t appreciate 20% after two years. If they did that would be all anyone drove.

Ugh, a page of bickering to see if anyone mentioned the possible tax advantage of trading in where you buy. Read up on your state because you could reduce your tax by trading in, and if your current vehicle is high dollar that could have an impact on what you do. Carmax was great for us - they paid IMO exactly what I could have gotten on the street by selling a 10 year old low miles minivan myself. I lost out on the reduction in tax but got rid of the van with zero haggle. Was worth it to me to avoid the Craigslist tire kickers.

Two other problems with selling it yourself are : (a) the buyer will try to get your price down , and (b) after he buys it , he'll return with complaints .

Maybe there is a new-found demand for inexpensive JKs , because of a certain frenzy to escape the newest electronic auto controls ? Such as ESS , for example . Maybe normal people don't want infotainment systems , ya think ?

Even if you ask , @Wanderingwheelz , I ain't selling you my reliable JK .

I don’t want your JL. I am crazy-pleased with my reliable JL.

Also... be sure to keep in mind that my JL Sport, which is anything but a stripper, was purchased brand spankin’ new with 4 miles on the odometer for $32,200. (AC, Auto, Anti-Spin. XM,Window Tint, All Weather Mats, Trail Rated Kit.)

It goes w/o saying that the vast majority of buyers would choose the latest and greatest over the what used to be the greatest for just a little bit more money. I had plenty of brand new 2018 JKs to choose from, but I chose the JL even though it cost me a bit more. It only took me a short test drive of both to be shown that Jeep did well with the JL, and it is unquestionably the superior Wrangler of the two.

Not to irritate , but if you are correct in denying appreciation of in demand vehicles , such as my JK , how do you explain the FJ Cruiser , which began it's appreciation climb right after they stopped selling them . Used FJ Cruisers are priced well over what they cost new .

I wasn't denying the JK isn’t an in-demand used car. Obviously, there’s demand for used Wranglers. I live at the beach and the local used car lot here is probably comprised of 30% JKs.

The only point I was trying to raise was about what you said about gaining your perceived value from dealer asking prices of used JKs. You only know what your cars value is after you’ve found a buyer.

Car models that are no longer in production, were built in relatively low numbers, and/or become scarce due to attrition, do appreciate at one point or another. The Wrangler isn’t out of production, though. Plus there were over 1.5 million new JKs built over its 10 year span many of which are still sitting on dealer lots as new. Even some 2017 models. That’s a lot of supply- probably enough to more or less meet demand for the foreseeable future.

Jerry Seinfeld sold 17 of his cars at auction a couple of years back for nearly $23,000,000 which is far more than the 17 first owners paid for them, collectively- even accounting for inflation. I 100% agree that used cars can appreciate in value.

Does that include Jerry's car which was infused with a stinky odor from a valet driver ? I thought he left it unlocked , with the keys in the ignition , hoping someone would steal it .

Dealer asking prices are not a reliable data point. That said, it's possible that you saw asking prices at $25k in 2016 and asking prices of $30k in 2018. Still not a reliable piece of evidence to come to that conclusion.
