Heres something that is blowing my mind. About a year ago I had the aux battery go bad. Instead of replacing it, I unhooked the ground and taped it up. No issues other than the light on the dash telling me it was not working. The other day, the jeep wouldn't start. I charged the main battery and got it started. Took it to O'reilly where i got the original main battery so they could test it and replace if needed since it was under warranty. They hooked everything up and said the battery was fine and the charging to it from the jeep was fine. So, I went on. Yesterday I was sitting in traffic and the jeep shut off. I thought it died on me, but realized it was just the auto on/off. I pushed the button to turn it off, and it was fine. I thought it was a fluke and I popped the hood to check, and the ground is till taped off and not attached. Tried it again later in the day and when I stopped at a redlight, sure enough the auto start/stop engaged.
Thoughts are: if I didn't detach the correct terminal, how was the jeep running on the aux battery for over a year? Or how did the ESS just start working all of a sudden? I don't ever hit the button to turn it off, because it has never worked before. But now I have to hit the button every time I start it up now. I'm really wondering how this is happening.

Auto stop start is a function that can be overridden by pushing a button or installing an aftermarket device for example. The confusion arises because people use that same name to describe the small secondary auxillary battery. Removing that battery from the equation doesn’t prevent the function.

Like @terrrymo said, the start/stop annoyance still happens after the aux is bypassed, pay the $250 or whatever to cancel it or finger the butt on for free.

Why would it not work for over a year, and then start working? With the terminal disconnected and the fuse pulled?

The stop start function did rely on that auxillary battery to function if it was healthy. The process involved in removing that Auxillary battery means your main battery runs that function now. In your owners manual there’s a list of about 50 reasons the stop start function will not work depending on circumstance.

The fuse does nothing to the ESS itself it just cuts the connection between the 2 batteries so your main 12v is used only.

It's always been enabled but most likely you were probably blasting the air or heat or one of the other situations which prevents ESS events.

Thanks for all the insight. That is strange. It didn't work and the warning light was on for over a year, and now, no lights and it works. I haven't changed anything.

So I can remove the aux battery, and the main battery will handle everything? I always thought the ESS was dependent on the aux battery alone, since it didn't work anymore when I removed the aux. Maybe when I charged the main battery, thats what made it start working?

This is a common circumstance and question on the forum. You’re in good company

It would be nice if just removing the auxiliary battery would prevent the function, but no such luck. Now the function just relies on your main battery if all other prerequisites are met. You can get a smart stop start device to tell the Jeep to leave the button in the last state it was in when you turned off the Jeep.

Thanks Terry. My main battery must have been low for a while then, that's why the ESS didn't work. It was just really giving me a headache, since it wasn't working when I disconnected the aux, then all of a sudden started working. I was freaking out
