It seems oil temps aren't consistent across the board either. I recently swapped in 5.38 gears specifically because I will be towing my M1102 trailer heavily loaded. The trip is relatively short (150 miles round trip). A couple 8-10% grades over a couple miles long. Once I returned home, I shot the stock cover with an IR gun which showed 145*. Better than I was expecting.

Point is, buy a cheap IR gun and see what your diff temps are running at then make an informed decision.

I really like ECGS and the services they provide, but will disagree with them that a synthetic like Amsoil is "marginal over a quality dino with additive package". There is no way a conventional (dino) gear oil can handle either cold or heat better than a synthetic. It has been proven countless times in the past 20 years.

I use conventional for break-in because it is cheap, gets the job done, and will be dumped in short order, but synthetics rule everywhere they can be applied.

TBT even many of the conventional engine oils on the market today are part synthetic and are no longer "all dino".

Thanks for doing the research in the first place. It was buried from 2020 and I thought it needed coming to light since I haven't seen anywhere else the data for our axles for different speeds etc. So it's very insightful. It makes a convincing argument IMO for frequent gear oil changes and perhaps lowering speed when towing, in mountains, with big tires and so on.

In the ECGS article you originally linked to, he acknowledges the debate between synthetics and conventional, but asserts that the internals stays cooler vs. the oil itself with conventional. Since I tow in summers, in mountains I think I will just change the rear diff oil every season or 5k mi whichever comes first and I will consider the Lucas and maybe be better off - and definitely cheaper. I will most likely continue to use Amsoil Severe Duty for the front diff and transfer case.

Yes, relatively short trips, keep the speed down, I think that will help keep temps down. However, still change the gear oil a lot more frequently because there is less of it for one, in the JL compared to JK, and two, because you don't want corrosive, oxidized oil eating the seals of locker sensor and actuator.

I believe it applies to most filters; the more the media fills with debris, the less porous it becomes, thereby improving filtration efficiency. The down side, is if it goes to far then it begins to restrict flow beyond design specs which can lead to starvation of water, oil or air, engaging bypass valves, increasing load and wear on blower motors etc. depending on application: to water filtration, house air, engine air, engine oil, and so on. And as mentioned previously, doing field check to knock out debris in the engine air filter may improve air flow (which modern engines will more than enough compensate for) at the risk of dust and dirt falling into air box to be inhaled by the engine. In those cases some sort of snorkel/centrifugal pre-filter is a better option.

While it does apply to all filters in general, the oil soaked ones are way worse when clean than even a mediocre paper filter. They flow so much better because they dont trap much at all until they start to get dirty. And if you over-saturate them with too much oil, it gets drawn in and can mess with your MAF, and more.

I've measured my front diff while breaking in my rear in 2wd after my regear. (Afterwards I switched to 4wd to do the front). There's no heat at all, basically. Run the interval as long as you like. 60k miles or more would probably be fine. 4wd use would shorten that, of course.

Minimal temperatures on the road with the front axle because the FAD prevents the gears from seeing a load. On the trails, the highest that I recall seeing was about 190F, the same for the rear on the trail.

I did some testing with an IR thermometer towing up a steep grade. I measured the outside of the diff and the trans pan and read the trans guage temp, took the delta which was 15 degrees, and added that to the diff reading for an estimated internal temp. My projected/estimated diff temp was 210F towing up a steep grade 55 mph, 55F ambient temps.

I decided to go with the Dana Spicer diff covers and the Amsoil severe gear 75w-140.

For gear oil change interval, I am projecting an extra 15 degrees for summer temps and an additional 5-10 degrees for the nodular iron over the stamped steel. So a projected total of 230-235F. Based on the interval recommendations, that works out to about 10k-12k mi interval.

For extra margin I will just do 10k intervals or one year, whichever comes first for the rear diff.

I think the biggest factor is just keeping the speed down when loaded/towing. Also, monitor trans temps and use that as guide so that if you see those temps increasing to 220 or above, most likely your diff and electronics are cooking too.
