Got around to a small lunch project today and replaced my stock plastic "open" fuel fill with the MOPAR fuel door.

Here's the finished product, which I'm loving. If you need any tips, I've put what I learned below!

Old stock fill area:

First, you need to remove the trim panel from the fuel door side. I found a flat head screwdriver, and a little persuasion worked great.

There are two tabs that pop from the top and a lip that tucks in the bottom. Lift the top, then it eases out at an angle.

Once the trim is removed, a nylon bolt is exposed. I used a 10mm socket and ratchet and gently got it started. I was able to back it out the rest of the way with the finger tabs.

After the bolt is free, the taillight can be removed by some gentle tugging. Make sure to have something ready to assist in holding the taillight so it isn't just hanging by the wire, or just disconnect it.

After doing some reaching inside and depressing the tabs on the stock filler, it will pop out. I ended up breaking a tab, but I also don't think I'll be returning to the old part.

The fill neck pops out of a rubber or silicone sleeve; you will need to align and push it through the new sleeve on the fuel door.

Once the new fuel door is properly aligned with the body panel using a tab on the top and popping the filler neck through, the assembly should snap right in.

You can press the fuel cap catch into the small hole designated and reinstall the cap.

Next, in reverse order of the above, reconnect your brake light, hand align it, reinsert the nylon screw, finger-tighten, then just barely tighten with the ratchet.

Reinstall the trim bottom lip first, align your wires, and depress the top.

Test your brake lights!

Now you should be good to go and looking better to boot.

Thanks Mike! Very nice write up for us with 2025 jeeps - totally different panel size as earlier models.

Nice looking Mojito too

Just to let anyone reading this thread know, if they do not know...

The install in regard to the fuel door is the same in regard to all model year JL's.
2018 to 2025 .... the same same install. Yes, the little interior access panel is a tad different in shape and size on the newer JL.

Great post...but why not install a "locking" fuel door? Bedrock locking fuel door from Ext Terrain, $90...the Mopar non-locking fuel door is $191...

@Blacksport

As a Floridian, you will have lets say fewer issues with the key lock on the fuel door then some other's might have... Yes, you in Florida will have to keep the lock clean .... free of sand, salt and such and you will need to routinely lubricate the lock.

For those in areas that have cold cold temps, ice, snow, road salt, mud, yuck, fuel door covers with an exterior lock can have associated weather related shortcomings..

Anyway, some may tell you a better way to go if you want a lock is to have it on the fuel cap and not on the door itself. To each his own...

I actually went with the MOPAR locking fuel cap, just got it keyed last night from a locksmith friend.

As the others mentioned, my concern is dirt and debris from off-roading, and then not being able to fuel up for the ride home. Cylinder locks, in my experience, have been janky at best, so I'm hoping to prevent issues when it counts!

@MikesMojito, after install, when the fuel door is open, can you see daylight when looking inside the door at the upper left clip? It seems like the clip is in as far as it can go, but I can still see daylight through the gaps on either side of the clip when looking at it from inside the fuel door. I cannot push it in any further to get it to "snap"-my Jeep body just flexes in if I push on it any further. I am wondering if this is how it is supposed to be or if it is not actually seated properly. Thanks!

While im not really seeing daylight, with a flashlight I can see a super thin band of light on the top sidelooks like a molded/machined intentional gap between the metal and the rubber gasket, maybe for some venting?

Also using a sm flashlight inside shining up, I have a very very thin sliver around the latching tabs, (roughly 10 and 2 position) when I point the light in those directions. There is no light coming at the top side when pointed straight up, nor at sides below the 10 & 2 tabs.

Also with the dr open I do not see any daylight coming through while looking up into the housing.

Also, I purchased my dr from a Mopar dealer if that’s relevant to the discussion.

@MikesMojito and @Texas Longhorn Thank you! I suspect mine is not seated properly. I installed it when it was really cold here and I'm wondering if caused the clips to be less flexible than they should be. The part I bought was an oem mopar part in its original packaging.
