I forgot to mention this. When I was in AZ wheeling in Kofa with my buddy, a Taco/Toyo fanboy, he rode passenger with me on a moderate trail with some mild rock crawling. He ACTUALLY said he was very impressed with the comfort of my built 2021 JLUR, on 35 MTs, on-road and especially off-road on an extremely bumpy, rocky off-road trail. He also commented on how much more tech was in my Jeep compared to his 4WD late-model Taco, which he off-roads frequently.

I don’t think I have converted him though. Between his ā€œpolitical syndromeā€œ and his Toyo fanboy mentality, I was shocked he said what he said. He seems to think only ā€œcertain peopleā€ drive built Jeeps🤣

Not off road, but I had a Taos rental the other day, I think that thing drove like šŸ’©, I was also in the backseat of a Toyota Uber, and that thing also felt like šŸ’©.

I previously had an IFS FJ Cruiser. It drove worse than my Jeeps.

As did the 05 4R my Jeep replaced. Even small bumps would jar me…… I wonder when was the last SFA Taco/4R ?

1986 if I recall correctly.
An old friend had a first gen Taco, and a second gen with the small extra cab. They were both vastly more capable than my 05 4R, but it was an unlimited not an off road model (the only way to get a V8).

I've wheeled with some built 3rd and 4th gens both SAS and still IFS that are very capable, but you'll need a bunch more mods than a JL to get there.

Tacos are decent pickups, but why take a pickup where you'd do better having a Jeep. Guys who are serious about turning pickups into capable wheelers usually end up bobbing the tail on those things.

The funny thing is you almost never see a Toyota truck at a job site. Like when you drive through a construction zone, almost never see a Toyota. Just like when in Moab, you will see many sweet kitted out Toyotas in the town of Moab, but I have never saw one on a trail rated harder than a 4. To the point that if we did see a Toyota on a trail, we would most likely see a Subaru or a Sprinter Van on the same trail.

And if you want a pickup to do Jeep stuff... there are better outings than starting with a Tacoma.

You won’t see a Toyota at a job site ran by a large contractor because of cost. Toyota trucks are more expensive. However, I see many older Tundras by smaller contractors. Why? Likely because they’re more reliable. I’ve had significant work done on my house the past few years and the large majority of contractors were driving 5-10 year old Tundras. I’m not sure what relation there is between a trail and a job site. If you need a Jeep with a 5ā€ lift, tons, and 40’s to get to the job site, you likely won’t have any contractors…There really isn’t much of a correlation.

That's just a flat out lie. I promise you the F-350s and F-550 we have at work are more expensive than anything Toyota makes.

Just to make sure, I checked Toyota's website...yeah while they aren't "cheap" our Fords cost more.

Then we get to the part where Toyota doesn't even make Superduty competitors. This is a silly argument.

Every actually good offroad Toyota I've ever seen was SFA swapped. That's how you can tell a fanboy apart from someone that actually wheels their Toyota in my experience.

Hey, they let you back in? I’m referring to your average home and small construction contractor. F-550 really? That’s your comparison? You might see those very rarely at large commercial construction. Your average deck builder, gutter person, plumber, etc. has zero need for an F-550. Used Tundras cost more than other half tons. Why would a plumber buy one? Because they’re more reliable. Simple as that. Let’s start comparing the cost of a Tundra to an airplane while we’re at it šŸ™„

Hey, I'm not the one that gets to decide those matters, don't blame me! HA

And an F-550 is still a truck, not an airplane. Not my fault Toyota doesn't want to play in that market.

And if we're being honest I want my work guys to show up in the best vehicle for the job, not the one they "made fit" the job. It shows they know what they are doing. Plumber? Van. Gutter guy? Van. Yard crew? pickup with trailer towing all their goodies, etc. That's what I want to see.

It's like when you buy a house, do you want the realtor driving a 6 figure Benz or a Camry?

I currently own a 2013 Tacoma.
Jeep Wrangler JL Taco Boy Impressed by my JLUR IMG_0412

I bought it brand new & put lots of money & time into it. I was getting more adventurous and was finding that what I was wanting to do, required a lot more wheel travel & a much shorter wheelbase. So I got my Jeep.

The shorter wheelbase is a huge advantage for me. BUT - My Jeep is way more comfortable on the trail. Some of it is due to tire size - 37s vs 35s; but wheel travel is the main reason. My Tacoma was always getting into the bump stops. It’s an IFS issue. That’s why many of you commented on it as well. Standard IFS just doesn’t have much wheel travel.
The only 2 solutions for me was a Marlin long travel kit or a solid axle swap - both about $15k all said & done. I was better off not putting more money into the truck & getting my Jeep. I love my Jeep - more than the Tacoma. My Jeep has had some reliability issues; but I don’t care. I bought it for it’s capability. It super comfy- we did over 5,000 miles of road trips in it last year. I love the modern tech in it that I don’t have in the older Toyota.

I’ve been really happy with my decision!
