Pilot models were submitted and named— Bantam BRC 60 “Blitz Buggy” became BRC 40 — Willys “Quad” became MA— Ford “Pygmy” became GP. When Willys was selected and renamed MB, Ford was changed from GP to GPW, the W referring to the Willys license, unfortunately just says “became known by it’s nickname, Jeep” . I have seen official documents referring to the MB/GPW as “Vehicle- General Purpose”. I might do a quick search to satisfy myself, Will edit if I find anything— info source— “Kaiser Willys” ? …. Child was confused when father got a second Jeep along with the 3A that had Ford on the dash plaque, not Willys, was explained. ?
My information is from my ancestor Delmar Roos, and yes, I have some of his documentation. Most of what you say above is true. The Ford version was the GPW and the W did stand for Willys. The G however stood for “government” and the P is the designation for that particular wheelbase.

Edit submitted— I couldn’t get the link so wore my finger out….. makes me wonder what “MA” changed to “MB” means ? ( ancestor that worked on the “Go Devil” design ?)

No evidence but I always thought that meant MILITARY BODY.

I think “B” was just the next letter in the alphabet for the newer model. That said, since we had JK and then JL, will the next generation be called the JM…with the nickname Jim or Gym? Sorry, I got distracted. Yes, Delmar was the Chief Engineer and inventor of the Go Devil, which I like to think is what gave Willys-Overland the advantage to beat Ford in the design competition. It’s an interesting story because the Go Devil put the weight of the vehicle over the maximum limit so the Engineering team at W-O has to do some pretty creative things to shed the pounds off.

Yes- Kaiser Willys stated that one of the reasons it was picked was due to “it’s powerful engine” along with production capabilities. ? unfortunately the 3A’s blew a head gasket, head surfaced, blew again, head replaced, blew again, must be the block, swapped with available 3B’s Hurricane. The Go Devil has laid around in 4 different garages for the 50 years since, just can’t bring myself to junk it. ?

This made me stop and think about what I knew. I grew up in Wyoming when hand signaling was the prescribed method on the books although they allowed electric turn signals as an appropriate substitution, ha. I just looked up their law and they've slightly changed it to say stopping and turning can be done by either hand and arm or by signal lamps. Washington State, where I now live, has no provision in their law for manual signaling, indicating all of it must be done using electric turn signals.

IIllinois Turn Signal Law

Every motor vehicle other than an antique vehicle displaying an antique plate or an expanded-use antique vehicle displaying expanded-use antique vehicle plates shall be equipped with an electric turn signal device which shall indicate the intention of the driver to turn to the right or to the left, change lanes.

Another section permits the use of hand signals and requires hand signals if thr electric turn signals are inoperative. Although it qualifies as an antique vehicle I have regular plates on 'Willy'. AFAIK vehicles plated as antiques can be driven in, to and from parades and shows. 'Willy' is my daily driver in good weather.

I've also wondered if drivers would even realize what they were seeing in an arm extended downward to indicate stopping.
i believe most have forgotten, i do use hand signals when riding my bike , but seems worthless , as most think otherwise

i think most of us Station Wagon guys couldn’t care any less.

the 2-dr vs 4-dr thing seems kinda’ like that ‘Toyota vs J**p’ thing; only the Toyota guys seem to care about it,.. ?

Nope, the station wagon Jeeps all get the iconic image of the 2-Door on their windshields and on their automatic gearshift levers. I've always wondered if it ticks them off... :)

I was driving a CJ-7 when Jeep not only renamed the platform, but started to use - gasp - square headlights. I remember at the time the friendly banter used the term, Real Jeeps have round headlights. Then when Jeep returned the platform to round headlights they - gasp - moved the turn signals to the fenders, and then - double gasp - they got rid of the good old tried and true leaf spring suspension with coils. And a few years after that when they returned the turn signals to their rightful position below the round headlights, they added - gasp - two more doors!

The beat goes on, I hope none of you think my attempt at humor is in any way some sort of assault of your choice of ride.

It ought to be noted that the four-door configuration of the Wrangler made it far more popular and in doing so it became the sales success that gave the current owners (Daimler/FCA/Stellantis) the justification for all the modern upgrades that we probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. Anyone really think the JL platform would be what it is today if FCA only sold 45 thousand examples a year?

If you ever decide to toss the Go Devil, please let me know. I would love to re-build one.

If it’s even rebuildable, it’s been laying around with the head off all these years, after the block was determined the cause of the blown gaskets. ? Will keep in mind but it has been passed down and no longer officially mine — 2’nd garage- my first it was in.

it’s amazing what we won’t part with. The 183’rd 50, or #50,183 of the total CJ3’s built ?
