When I bought a Wrangler 2 months ago I thought to myself, "finally I have a hitch, bike rack options are going to awesome and plentiful". Little did I know it would basically come down to 2 options, 2 very expensive options. I read page 1 to decide I wanted the Kuat, I read pages 2-12 to figure out how to actually get it to play nice with a Wrangler.

the things you can do with a vice and a hammer. Still looking forward to the new handle. But...
Can someone confirm whether the hitch extender is needed or not with the Pivot? Is it only needed for this arm to clear? Or is it needed anyway even when the new arm is released? I'm eyeing down the 1up 7.5" extender and debating whether I should go ahead and order or not.

I got it worked out with a bend, no extension
30 days out on the new handle

I bought the Yakima BackSwing

I didn't need to bend anything to get it to work. I think it has a longer extension piece that goes in the hitch. I'll take pictures of it later. The lever actually fully clears my 315-70-17 ko2. I can almost fully open the swing gate. It does rub a bit when doing so though on my jlur. If the tire were any taller, it may not clear. If going bigger you'd probably need a spare mount adapter to raise it some. I may still get an adapter just so it doesn't rub at all. Here is link

Thanks for the response. It looks like deniska must be using an extender then, given the difference in bend between the two of you. Or is it because of a custom wheel/tire on your end?

How much space is there between your bike and the back tire? Might just be the angle, but they look extremely close to one another.

It’s the wheel offset
I think he’s in stockers
These are 37x12.5 4.5 backspacing
It’s the angle
I can fold the rack up when no bikes are on it

Finally got around to buying and installing the rack. Went with 1Up single and used Kuats Hi-Lo extender. Used the 7” extension hole and minted it facing down. With rack angled down the rear gate just clears and opens all the way.

Very happy. Will use it for the first time tomorrow.

Now I can report now with bike in the fit is perfect!

Installed Yakima BackSwing and Thule xt pro. Full use of tailgate with bikes on. Just swing out. With the weight of the bikes, it brings down the BackSwing enough that it doesn't rub at all when opening tailgate.

I was trying to make a funny. Reading through the thread, the two previously mentioned were basically the only ones seriously considered by several posters.

No complaints for price of SR1, but would probably not add a second bike unless hinge reinforcement installed.
I picked one up since I like the option for being able to open the back easily. Also mine are two very light (17lb each) road bikes, so I'm wondering if I should get the Mopar Tailgate reinforcement.... Total weight will likely be close to 50 lbs. thoughts?

I went with the Yakima Ridgeback 2. Not ideal if you’ll be using it frequently—doesn’t lower enough to open the gate. I’ll probably use it 2-3 times a year so the price was right for my needs. Would need a hitch extension if I go bigger than stock on the tires. Instructions say not to use with a hitch extension. Do they have to say that or is that a definete no no?

Bought installed and took a 5 hour drive with a Yakima full swing + hitch extender. Perfect.
