Guess I should've waited a bit before posting... the Insane Audio JL4001 head unit just arrived on my desk. ?

We'll be doing an install video soon. Is there anything anyone wants to see covered?
Does it play nicely with the wireless CarPlay devices (Carlinkit)?

From our Insane Audio guy:
I had to get an answer on this as I know we work with CarPlay connected, but not sure on the Carlinkit.

For now we are only saying CarPlay and Android Auto work as a tethered connection. In the past, the wireless function on the CarPlay often caused issues (connection issues).

It could be a future software update, but not ready yet.

I installed one of the restyle 509's in a JT, As a long time installer, I was used to most of the menus from the Alpine, but the owner isn't happy with it. It's buggy in some things, but since you're coming from the 7" it might be a huge step up. It comes down to what's important to you, but I would stay with a more common aftermarket brand unless you can do your own work (or if the shop will warranty the install work for you).

They would. They reflexively blame any non-factory modification even remotely related.

But, not without reason. Did the OEM unit fail during or immediately after the aftermarket upgrades? In that case, yeah, the install probably messed something up.

But if you had six months of trouble free operation, and then the head unit went out, that's an unrelated coincidental failure, and they're just blowing smoke.

For 1200 bucks, it may be worth trying to repair the OEM head unit. But finding an electronics expert who can do that level of diagnosis can be problematic. If there's a failure on a board with SMD (Surface Mount Devices) then you might have to send the board to a specialty repair shop.
Thanks, that’s very helpful. The unit was exhibiting symptoms intermittently since the install, but since the Jeep is barely driven, it wasn’t of much concern until it failed.
Didn’t think of getting the head unit repaired. Will look into it. Thanks again

The dealer tried blaming my winch and aftermarket headlights for the amplifier going out, the winch and LED ring wiring wasn’t even hooked up at the time!
That’s what makes the extended warranty pointless on a wrangler. Who keeps it stock anyway?

That's the standard tag for when we do not have the product in one of our warehouses.

Just checked with Insane Audio, they have a bunch of the 4001s in stock and can drop ship right away. So only a few days to get to you.... ;)
A detailed video of the install would be awesome. And then about a month or so later do a "how i like it or hate it" video. How easy is it to install apps on it? Also, how easy does it accept aftermarket subs and amps? Performance of stock speakers after install or what speakers did you install.

Been wanting to upgrade my 5" radio for a long time and add a sub or amp. Guessing i will have to upgrade speakers too. So all of your input would be very helpful.
Thanks.

Yes, we'll be doing a how-to. The older 3001 model was really simple, hoping the new 4001 model will be the same.

Thanks for the ideas on what to show and the follow up video. We haven't done many of those.

@Tech Tim Does it use the factory backup camera? Also does it have a XM input? Can't figure that out from the docs.

Yes, it does use the factory BU camera.

Checking on the XM capabilities.

Thanks. Digital BU cam makes going the Maestro route difficult. Metra Axxess builds an analog camera for the JL but I really would not want to run the wire.

It wasn't the speed of loading, it has more to do with the using the OEM Alpine amp and speakers (he felt like it didn't sound as good as the OEM setup) and the aftermarket units don't support the digital cameras. His JT also includes the front Trail camera that isn't directly supported without extra parts. He started with the 8.4 so it'll be different for you.

Does the restyle have better sound quality than factory and more power or is it about the same ?
