Willing to give them the benefit of the doubt this time around, but I'm pretty skeptical since it didn't even get into the shop until noonish today and was cleared to leave before 5pm. I don't know much about how they cpus register and store codes. I would think they would have been able to plug in and read it actively to see if it was happening in real time.

Hopefully it doesn't come back but them having it for a week and not even looking at it to then just clear is cause for suspicion. I'm going to ask about what they did in terms of diagnosis other than clear/drive so I can document it all.

If it comes back I'm definitely going to raise a bigger stink.

Picking it up in the morning. Thoughts and prayers...

A dead misfire on 1 cylinder would be incredibly obvious to everyone involved. The test drives they take are with a diagnostic tool capturing live data including misfire count.

Picked it up from the dealership this morning, drove 19 miles to my office. Got back in this afternoon to drive home and BAM! CEL came on again. Bringing it back in the morning. Not happy...

Dropped it off at the dealership this morning. Supposedly they had already pulled the spark plugs to inspect those and saw no issues there before doing the clear and test drive. They will be digging in further to investigate.

What really sucks here is the warranty process for the dealership to get paid for their work. Something as simple as a cracked electrode inside of the spark plug could be the issue, and you would never see it. If it was already out, there’s no reason to put it back, especially if there is a misfire.

You seem to think that code = diagnosis.
Not even close.

P0301 indicates a misfire on cylinder 1. This could be due to a fuel, spark, air, or compression issue. Any of these could be due to any one of multiple different potential failure points.

All you can do with an intermittent cylinder specific misfire is a compression test, check spark plug condition for evidence of fuel/oil/coolant contamination, test drive it in an attempt to repeat the failure, and then return the vehicle to the customer.
As someone who works on a ton of engines/cars/trucks/bikes I can't agree with this more. an intermittent misfire can be very elusive to track down, even with modern diagnostics tools.

My 08 f150 threw a bank 2 (that covers 4 cylinders) misfire code for a year off and on before I tracked it down. Truck never drove poorly, but kept throwing the code. ended up discovering it was actually the knock sensor wire had been routed wrong by the dealer tech, pinching it against the head. so it rubbed and exposed wire that would short to the head randomly. Can't reliably reproduce a random occurrence like that. This was done by the dealer as part of warranty work. Same tech also put a faulty starter back in. Had to fix that in a parking lot myself laying in a foot of snow.

This is why I rarely let a mechanic, let alone a dealer tech, work on my vehicles. I have a very trustworthy independent mechanic I take vehicles to when I can't figure it out, or it's a fix I really don't want to do, or I'm missing the expensive equipment to do it right.

Obviously if your vehicle is under warranty ya kinda should take it to the dealer, as frustrating and often useless as that might be.

Update: I will be picking it up from the dealership tomorrow for a bit.

They determined I need new fuel injectors, which they have, but are waiting on new lines to arrive, which will be in mid Octoberish. Fingers cross those come in and they can get it up to snuff.

Hope this isn't a thing. Engine light just came on at 180 miles. Just picked it last Friday night, haven't even had it a week yet.

Fingers crossed for ya. Get it scanned as soon as you can. Mine came on very early as well, and I hoped it would work it's way out, checked fuses, light came and went until I finally had them look at it. Been driving all week so far so good, seems to also start up with slightly less noise than previously, maybe, could be in my head though.
