392 or Hurricane (Tornado?)

I'm considering trading in my fairly built 2019 JLUR for a new Wrangler w more power and an AT (lifelong MT guy, but tired of the MT/clutch in my JL). I'm not in a rush...although...

...it looks like the window for the 392 is shrinking. However, the 500hp out of the Hurricane is a fine replacement for me. Suspect a CAI/TBE w a tune and you'd have an easy 600hp. I'm not looking to run 1/4-mile times, but w a lot of gear/weight in my MT there isn't enough power to hold cruise at 70mph on a slight incline. That's w 4.88.

I read an article last week that said the Hurricane was too large for the JL and they were looking at a smaller, single turbo Tornado motor. I can't find that article now (it was written in May).

So - get a 392 while I can or wait for Hurricane (Tornado)?

392s seem to hold value better than any other Jeep. Shouldn’t be hard to swap it out later on if you wanted. But by the time the new engines come out, a full electric Wrangler will be just around the corner. The electric RAM is supposed to be out later next year. And my guess is there will be an electric trim level that’ll outperform any ICE Jeep… until it runs out of battery power haha

I am. My JLUR is paid off, full Teraflex suspension, RCV's, 37's, etc. It is missing 100hp and a functioning MT or AT...

I’d get the 392, surely you can get what ever engine comes next but when that happens the 392 most likely won’t be around. At least then you’ll have the option to trade in the 392 if for what ever reason you don’t like it.

Hurricane will be available and make more power, be more efficient, but probably won't sound as visceral as the current 392
ideally Jeep makes the Hurricane an optional engine on all trim levels so you don't need to spend near $80k to get the most powerful Wrangler

has jeep confirmed the hurricane will be in the wrangler? Even if so, how much power? Could be a while before we see a 392 replacement, if ever really. 392 while you can. Easy resale if you decide to swap out later. Plus you can enjoy it while waiting to see reviews on the hurricane.

I for one, would not consider buying a new configuration engine, until it has been in production for at least 2 years.

Struggling with this whole idea that the Hurricane is too large for the JL. The early rumors on its design were that even tho it's a straight six, by edict, it was meant to fit into the same space as the V8s it was targeted at replacing. Since the 392 fits, albeit snuggly, the Hurricane should as well.

My dad is a car guy... had a bunch of souped up Corvairs when he was young, then a 280ZX, a supercharged Bonneville (back when those were big power numbers), a Mercedes SL, two XK8s... he's driven a Tesla the last 6-1/2 years and loves it... I'm the one that leans left in the family, and I was trying to talk him into a C8 Corvette the other day, but he won't buy another ICE vehicle... he loves electric that much. It's a different driving experience, but that instant torque makes him giggle.

I'm totally not telling you to buy one... but I do recommend checking them out.

If it fits your finances, I'd get the V8... I love turbo engines and the straight 6 figures to be great. But the V8 is a dying breed... there will be plenty of time to still get the turbo 6.

Unfortunately the hurricane is a lot longer then the 392. The 392 is only slightly longer then a 4 cylinder.
