Understand your approach... we will just have to agree to disagree about the usefulness of this unnecessary "feature".

Currently there are some easy hacks(hood sensor) to disable it so you don't have to hit the button every start, but eventually there will be a better way to deal with disabling this. There are threads on this board that discuss this in more detail.
Yeah I'm aware of these hacks, I just have never met anyone that has a so so attitude towards the ESS, they either really like it or really hate it, no in between. I'm averaging 4 MPG better than my old truck and part of that is from not idling at some of these long stop lights in town. If you never head into town with your Jeep then I guess you won't even have to deal with ESS but I use mine as a daily driver, and work in town.

LOL to those guys complaining about a technology that has been around for 10+ years, do they also dislike having power windows? Just because Jeep decided to add it to your Wrangler doesn't mean it's new and it will break your engine. FIAT has had it for years :cwl: OP your tips are great, ignore the trolls.

After driving my Jeep for these past few weeks and getting to learn how to work ESS.

First off, ESS will not auto stop your engine until it is at operating temperature so no need to worry about it until its warmed up.

Tips:
1. The auto stop is sensitive to your brake pressure. When you approach a stop sign or some other quick stop where an auto stop isn't necessary, use light brake pressure to avoid an auto stop when your going to immediately move after stopping.
2. Use medium brake pressure to initiate an auto stop when you're at a red light or stop sign where you wait for traffic or drive through window.
3. The engine will restart when you start to lift your foot off the brake, so keep a consistent brake pressure to avoid an unnecessary restart for the duration of the red light.
4. Don't have your A/C cranked to maximum. This will cause your ESS to keep cranking your engine several times at a stop light and will get annoying pretty quickly. I use my automatic climate control to keep a comfortable temp and it doesn't start the engine unnecessarily.
5. In heavy stop and go traffic, just disable the ESS. Chances are you'll only be stopped for a second or two and the ESS will drive you insane.
6. Shift into park quickly.

Anyone else have any tips that don't involve a big Grumpy Cat response?
Here's a tip: turning the wheel restarts the engine as well as removing a little brake pressure, so either will get you ready for that jack-rabbit start when the light turns green.

Sean, I see exactly what you are trying to accomplish, here, but my instincts tell me anything you have to say about ESS will fall on deaf ears. Like you, yourself, said, either you love it (in which case you'll read this thread quickly and nod) or you hate it (in which case you'll write responses attacking the tech, and possibly the poster). It's kind of a lose-lose for you.

I, myself, like the concept, and the engine cycling off and on has never been a cause for concern for me. Like you, I will never understand why people are so opposed to it, even though I've read every thread on this forum concerning ESS. The arguments against just aren't reasonable. But I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince people that they're wrong/just don't get it/it not as bad as you think/it has advantages etc. I think you're probably getting the idea why after reading your responses.

I recently took advantage of the seatbelt chime disable procedure. I am traveling this week and can’t check but I do believe that when I don’t have the belt on, the ESS stops. Is that correct?

I am NOT recommending this a an ESS workaround. In fact, I may even wear it MORE to enable the ESS because I do believe it to be a good feature in SOME driving conditions.

Wait...why would anyone not wear a seatbelt? Are you a mailman?

This one took me a few weeks to figure out because I was looking at all the other things that had to be checked in order for ESS to initiate (like cabin temp you mention). Personally, ESS has grown on me. It would never be a must-have option, but I don't mind that the Jeep has it. Once I realized how to use the brake pedal pressure properly I do really like having ESS. I'm also very happy that the off button is front and center to easily turn it off when I'm getting on some trails.

Thanks for the helpful tips for the newcomers to ESS like me!

ESS just plain sucks. It is only there to get this Jeep to do better on the over regulated EPA requirements. It is hard on the engine, it is annoying, it adds cost to the initial purchase of the vehicle, and increases future maintenance cost.

The only good ESS is a DISBALED ESS.

Sorry I can't give you a non "big Grumpy Cat response".
Looking at your picture, I am reminded of my '80 K5 that had stop/start technology. It would stall at every light...

There is no advantage to be taken with ESS. It sounds ridiculous. When I forget to turn it off, it is embarrassing at stoplights.
Embarrassed? Unless you’re stalling a Manual because of it, you shouldn’t be embarrassed of a feature engineers specifically put into a vehicle on purpose.

Why yes, yes I do have advice regarding the ESS...

HUNT DOWN THE ENGINEER THAT PERMANENTLY ENABLED IT, (WITH NO OPTION TO TURN IT OFF OTHER THAN PRESSING A F%^$#@! BUTTON EVERY TIME OR DISABLING THE OUTER MOST HOOD PIN) DUCT TAPE HIM TO YOUR PASSENGER SEAT FOR A MINIMUM OF 7 DAYS AND MAKE HIM PUSH THAT F$#@!%^ BUTTON REPEATEDLY MORNING NOON AND NIGHT.
TELL HIM IF HE EVER PULLS SOMETHING THAT STUPID ON ANY OTHER CAR HE WORKS ON THAT YOU WILL COME TO HIS HOUSE, SKIN HIS CAT AND MAKE A DAVEY CROCKET HAT FOR YOURSELF RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS KIDS.

When I roll up at a light in my new JL, ain't nuthin' gonna embarrass me! (Except if Spandau Ballet comes on when I have that Alpine system cranked. And maybe not even then.)
