Took a 2,000 mile trip last week and needed some extra storage, so I made a swing away hitch carrier box.
Components:
Features
Knobs secure the box to the carrier. There are also ratchet straps on the sides.
Plate Bracket, Carrier and Light (light is just below the camera and has black tesa tape so it doesn't shine backwards)
Frame (before making up the wiring)
Wire Extension (used stainless rivets to attach cable anchors on the pivot)
Components:
- 3/16 steel tubing
- Kuat swing away carrier that I got used from Amazon for $220.00
- Strut channel rails and fittings that I used for my Gladiator's bed ski rack.
- DeWalt rolling tool box
- Trailer wiring extension and trailer wire harness
- Aluminum trailer lights
- Wifi Backup Camera
- Steel license plate bracket
- Small LED license plate light (that I pulled out of a cheap plastic license plate holder)
- Some knobs to secure the box
- Stainless ratchet straps to secure the box
- Tesa tape and marine electrical connectors that I had from my boat
Features
- Swings to the drivers side - I can swing the box out just enough for the tailgate to clear it. This allows me to open the tailgate completely without having the swing the box open completely.
- Backup camera can be used via my phone when I need to see behind the cargo box. I had wanted to use an OEM camera that I could toggle between the tire camera and the rack camera, but this was too much work.
- I can lock the box to the safety chain attachment points on the hitch receiver.
- Plate is visible and lighted.
- Can be reconfigured and built upon with strut channel.
- Working on a rack to attach my snowboard Sportube box.
- My balloon wheel beach cart can mount on the rack.
