AFE CAI installed on 392 V8 -- before and after dyno numbers

I just purchased my '23 392 about 2 weeks ago. I had it shipped in from Nebraska to Texas, as that was the closest place I could find with orange 392.

I bought this intake and wanted to do a real world before and after to see what it would actually pick-up on the dyno. I honestly did not have high hopes in picking up much, however I was pleasantly surprised. It only took me about 10 minutes to remove the old intake and install the AFE unit on my buddy's dyno.

It picked up throughout the mid-range, which is where I was wanting it to pick up if it did.

If anyone else like to mod every vehicle they have as much as I do then I'd say this is not a bad investment.

Would be interested to see if the ecu corrects after awhile and takes away the gains

Can you explain the graphs please? They're obvious to you because you set up the test. Not to us who are seeing them without context.

There are two photos; I'm having trouble seeing a difference between them, not sure what to look for.

Then on each photo, there are two pairs of torque/hp lines, Red/Green. Before/After?

So both graphs are the same. We were just looking at different points in the rpm range at what it picked up.

The red is stock and green is after CAI install. If you can tell in the graph one is light green/red and one is a darker green/red. The lighter color is torque and the darker is horsepower.

I have honestly never seen that happen in any car I've ever modified. Not saying that it hasn't, just never happened to me. In any case I will be installing the Livernois tune after I get my unlock ECU back. I will do another dyno after I tune it to see real world numbers.

I know it happened in my C7 Z06. Had a big gain in the beginning then it pretty much went back to stock after a couple hundred miles. Now that is a supercharged motor and had a much bigger increase in airflow. It may be that this is a small enough gain it won’t adapt.
Do you feel any difference when you are driving. Really looking forward to hearing your results with livernoise. Been debating for awhile to get on that train. Really want to remove that torque dip and improve the shift points.

How does the outside air flow through the hood to the mouth of the CAI? Did you have the hood open (like in the video) during the dyno pulls?

It does feel better in the middle when getting on it. I was doing this in preparation for the Livernois tune, hoping it would help with more air for the tune. Guess we will see.

Yes. Hood was open for the for the dyno run.

That's where I was heading with my question. The challenge with CAIs is getting outside air to them. Leaving the hood open invalidates the results. If you can get a bump with the hood closed, you're on to something. That virtually never happens without a ram air inlet of some sort.

FWIW, I've tried CAIs twice in the past. I wanted them to work too, but they only added underhood bling and intake honk.

Yeah with such minor differences you really need to look at a lot of sensor data to see if it’s actually beneficial.

this is indeed a big problem. It also might not matter if the hood is closed as you may not see any downsides until the engine bay is heat-soaked and your pulling in 160 degree air. The factory intakes tend to do a great job in actually being cold air intakes, which should be called “ambient” air intakes.

It depends where they pull the air from.

IE an AFE intake made 25whp on my 6.2LGM truck. Even though the AFE did actually create less restriction, the factory intake did a far better job at always pulling in close to ambient air. You pull up to a traffic light in the aftermarket intake and you’d see the IAT’s skyrocket

I had a CAI on an Accord V6 couple years ago. I didn't notice much of a difference. Below 3k RPMs it was quiet. If you hit the gas when it was over 3k RPMs it had a mean growl, especially if you were under a bridge. I always enjoyed making a little noise when people weren't expecting it. But it added 20hp at most... so not a noticeable performance boost.

You put on an intake and tested it BEFORE and AFTER in a controlled environment, same day, same dyno?

These are actually real results. You wouldn't happen to have a graph with engine speed on the x-axis to see what rpm these power increases are would you?

I have dismissed intakes as adding any power to modern vehicles, but here's the proof for this engine.
