It's no different than the competitive shooting world. How many people have you met at shoots that have been given optics, etc? Companies have to get word out about their products. YouTube is becoming the most successful way to do that as print is dieing.

Men trying to make a living doing what they love. And inform and entertain like-minded others.
Gotta hate that.

Wow, lots of bad vibes here towards fellow forum people. I do not watch a ton of Youtube but I have never had any real doubt about the reviews of things generally being "sponsored". And if I wasn't smart enough to realize this I wouldn't admit it!

In the competitive shooting world, rifles at least? Almost all of them are sponsored. My son is 10 and he has been offered all sorts of stuff because he shoots extremely well at these competitions...not for a 10 year old, he shoots extremely well for an adult. I always thank them and say no, but i don't have an issue with the guys who accept sponsorships. Precision rifles are VERY expensive and a lot of guys couldn't afford to compete without the help. The main difference is the guys who accept sponsorships in the shooting world generally have team jerseys with all the sponsors on them, like Nascar. You know what you're getting.

My issue is not the sponsorship at all. I'm all for it, and it makes sense and i love all the install videos and everything else. What sticks in my craw is the fact that a lot of these YouTubers are not upfront about their relationship with the company who's product they're "reviewing". It's a commercial disguised as a review, especially when they mix actual reviews in their content. Andrew St Pierre-White (4xoverland) is the worst about this, but otherwise his content is excellent.

I would just like more honesty and transparency. But hey, I'm not king of the universe it's just my opinion.

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
I believe in actions not words. Say something is good...Ho hum yada yada what ever. Since this is a Jeep forum say something is good. Then beat it on the trail video after video.....well there you go. I watch a lot of youtube videos on Jeeping and Jeeping stuff. Some of the Jeep Youtube channels have had up to five different lifts on their year old JL. and each one of them was great.

If a YT channel puts on a product and then they wheel hard, and LIte Brite does wheel hard, as you can often view them taking the hardest lines, and the product stand up, well you may have a good idea how they will stand up to the type of punishment that you intend to put your Jeep through. I am actually surprised that Lite Brite does not break stuff more often and if a product did fail, I might not even place the blame on the manufacturer and more on Kevin as he does push his JL harder than any that I have seen.

I never understand why people care how others make their money. Success of others rarely take success from someone else. At the end of the day, I am responsible for how I spend my money. I get to decide how and what it is spent on and I get to decide what I watch. The Youtuber peddling products is not new. This type of content has been on TV, radio, and in print media for years. To be incensed by this just seems silly to me.

Personally, I am glad that there are people that can make a living doing the things that they love. I am glad that they are not sitting at home on the couch collecting welfare or droning at some lifeless job. I am not envious of these Youtubers, but I am happy that they found something in life that will pay them for their passion. I would hope that everyone of us was able to get paid for doing something we love to do. If we were all getting paid to do the things we love, we would never work again.

I am sure some of these popular channels like Lite Brite, Trailrecon, [Banned Site] often get approached by manufacturer and sponsors that they turn down for what ever reason and we never hear about it or why they declined to use the product. We only see the ones they agree to do business with.

What I like most about the YouTubers are I get to see first hand where they go and then I get to decide if I am going to add their spot to my bucket list of trails to run.

At least with LiteBrite, I don't recall them ever doing a "review" of anything. They do a lot of "hey look we got this cool part, see us install it on our rig. And then next video see us bash it into rocks." I've never really seen them do a video where they say "here's a part we got, let me show you why you should buy it", it's more "here's a part we got, we like it, if you want it here's a discount code."

Am I the only one that's totally frustrated by the YouTube sellouts? You try to find some good content, but its just one commercial after another. Even vloggers I really like are basically just cheap product whores. Is there any content available that's not a commercial?
Agreed. Ive tried finding content to help me with my build and very little out there.

I was debating making my own instructional videos but....I suck at cars lol

Ive been able to figure things out but not sure I wanna go back and try and make instructional vids. We'll see.

You sir, are not a sellout. What’s your channel? I’d like to subscribe.
My channel is called "OFFRD". Like people mentioned, a lot of us actually have day jobs and YouTube is just something we do for enjoyment on the side because we love cars/trucks/Jeeps. Since YT isn't how I earn a living, I don't have the equipment that a lot of YouTubers have so my videos don't have a professional feel to them. They're kind of "cheap" actually. Maybe one day I'll buy some better cameras/mics/software. It's actually pretty expensive and time consuming to do nice videos.

But, my only goal is to help people who may be shopping for a JL Wrangler, or shopping for products for their JL Wrangler. And like I said, I have bought everything on my Jeep with my own money, with the single exception of the Trektop NX which I'm currently reviewing for Bestop. I do monetize my vids just so that I can recover a little of the cost of buying mods, but my earnings are a drop in the bucket compared to what I've spent.

Like you, I'm just a Jeep fan. :)

I watch more YouTube than TV these days. I don’t really have anything bad to say. I enjoy a lot of them.

Subscribed..

I'm in the same boat. I'm making a few vids, here and there, to show the fun our family is having on the trails and to learn more about video production for YouTube. At some point I'll be doing more vids and maybe take a stab at making money from it but right now my job pays exceptionally well so I'll keep my day job.

Should I be offended by those putting out their youtube sites on here? ;)

Just kidding obviously. I find youtube a great equalizer for the joe or sally anyone who puts out a product that one has control of watching or not watching.

I developed an Internet BS alarm a long, long time ago.
I like to think it’s pretty well-calibrated.
I want information when I seek information.
I reckon it’s my job to filter that information through my BS alarm.
Just do that, and all will be well.
At least I have found it to be so.
