On a side not that completely as nothing to do with this thread...lol

When did push mowers become $300? Was thinking about getting a new one and went to look them up and was pretty shocked. I think the one we have was like $150 when we purchased it. I mean its been 10 years but still.

But it makes it a bad choice for a daily commute vehicle if you don't intend to ever go wheeling.
Jmo, but I think my JL makes for a fantastic commuter and have absolutely zero complaints related to anything that makes it a capable off-roader. Compared to other passenger vehicles I've driven over the years, the steering's responsive and surprisingly precise, the ride quality is super comfortable and the cabin is unusually quiet for something shaped like a brick. Fuel economy really isn't half-bad either, though I wouldn't mind a slightly larger fuel tank. Anyone seriously complaining about any of that likely never drove the comparatively crude shit we drove decades ago.

Think my biggest complaints are dealing with some of the weird quirks of the excessive gadgetry. Just dumb things like the HVAC constantly deciding to turn on my A/C all the time, even in manual mode. Digital gas gauge being imprecise and suddenly dropping an 1/8 of a tank. Can't turn down the obnoxiously boomy subwoofer. Just little stupid shit like that.

I personally don't give af if the windshield folds down and even that the top and doors come off. Constantly hitting bugs with the steep rake of the windshield gets annoying, but I really don't want Jeep to change that if it means getting rid of something that others enjoy. It's nice, but that stuff could stay or go and it doesn't bother me either way. And while I honestly have no intention of flexing on big boulders for leisure and there's really not many around here that I come across. Don't really consider driving down most of the unpaved paths around here as "off-roading", but it's certainly pretty useful that I can now go up some rural driveways that would've absolutely trashed my last vehicle and it goes pretty damn good in deep snow when I actually need to get someplace. The original Jeep was never designed to be a fun recreational vehicle for you to drive down the beach with the wind in your hair or to crawl technical trails to earn badges, it was made to actually get you somewhere and back again.

And hey, if it wasn't for people complaining for creature comforts that fundamentally nerfs what makes it a more capable off-roader, you wouldn't be driving a big-ass 4-door and I probably could've bought the long-gone 2-door Sahara that I really wanted. How dare you! 😁

Well- the original CJ was designed as as 1- runabout 2- light tractor 3- mobile power until 4- light truck. However— “fun recreational vehicle to drive down to the beach with the wind in your hair” - Why Hell Yes !!! 👇

Was thinking more along the lines of our first military Jeeps, prior to the early agricultural CJs and the gradual evolution that followed throughout the years. But I'm sure even those were enjoyed outside of combat and farming at times!

My last "commuter" before my Wrangler was a squirrely little Japanese sedan that could do nearly 170MPH. I didn't drag race it anywhere, practice time attack laps on the highway or enter in the annual off-road rally nearby, but I thoroughly enjoyed driving my low-slung, incredibly noisy and harsh go-cart on rails ride to work every day (my back eventually hated it). It mostly fit my needs for getting from point A to point B at the time and was just fun to drive around. I had no complaints about why it was how it was, but it had a horribly thin paintjob and a mediocre mfg/dealer experience. The vehicle itself didn't need a fundamental change, but there's always little things that can be improved and legitimately bitched about. Jeep could certainly improve a few things like that as well, but the Wrangler's still a very capable little machine that's just fun to drive around wherever.. on the beach, to the mall, on the trails, whatever you bought it for! Most people drive around everyday in pickup trucks with empty beds. Doesn't necessarily mean they bought the wrong vehicle just because they're not fully utilizing its features, right?

The JL is so vastly different compared to the early CJs and military Jeeps, but as long as people keep buying them (for whatever reason), maybe it'll stick around for another 80 years, and if so, it'll be a heck of a lot different than what we're driving today.

Spoiler alert, but it's 100% gonna look like the goofy flying car from the Jetson's - which can go over anything! Hopefully we'll still be able to remove the bubble 😆

Dad bought the 3A from a farmer who got a real tractor. The 3A went from the 2A’s 4.88’s to 5.38’s to enhance “tractor”, at the expense of “runabout” with the max speed reduced from 60 to 45 mph. Today’s priorities are big screen TV’s auto everything with all the bells and whistles. John Willys Just Enough Essential Parts has been history since AMC….. But I like a lot of it, could do without a lot too. Admittedly, getting old and not nearly as tough so I couldn’t handle my 63 for another 12 year DD anymore.
my 170 mph vehicle was your car’s opposite, a 69 GTX with power nothing except to the ground. ~6mpg hwy- 3 city on minimum 100 octane. Limited to ~170 mph because that’s when the front end came off the ground, might have used the 200 mph speedometer otherwise. 3-170 mph attempts having never heard of speed rated tires, and on hwy 99. Not dead or in jail. Dumbass kid also ruined my 63 MD building it’s approaching 400 hp Chevy into an approaching 700 hp blown Chevy…… Whipple recently returned my e mail saying CARB approval should be wrapped up soon…. Now an old Dumbass who will never learn.🙄
BTW- the DJ 3A Surrey was built until 64.

Surely nobody is that insane right?
Why do they have to be “morons”? Wouldn’t you expect a better steering system in a 50k+ truck?
No I don't want rack and pinion steering in my Wrangler. If you want that go buy a Bronco.
